Hangfire IPA (7.5% ETOH; 100++ IBU): Tasted 6-17-2014
Appearance- Clear and moderately dark - darker than traditional IPA. The head is frothy white and not too large or small - just right; and very aromatic of hops.
Aroma- Hoppy with a hint of citrus. Nose of a darker caramel malt.
Taste- Darker caramel-coffee flavor with bitter taste of finishing hops (a good thing!). Moderately bitter for an IPA. Coffee after-taste such as in a porter. Although high in alcohol (7.5%), this does not come across as difficult to drink as in some over-proof beers. Goes down quite smoothly.
Mouthfeel- is not as thick as I expected due to higher alcohol and, of course, the effervescence which I liked.
I Enjoyed it but prefer IPAs that are lighter in color and not so strongly flavored of darker malt. Dark heavy IPAs are recent on the craft beer market and this one will fit nicely. But, I'd rather have a traditional lighter IPA that is very hoppy and bitter.
My wife really liked it (a shocker!) because of the deep color and strong taste of caramel and coffee. She thinks it has hints of chocolate, as well, but I didn't get that.
