This is a simply excellent, well-rounded dark ale with a lot of character and great balance. It really is rather like a brown ale or lighter porter but they call it a "dark amber" and it really is rather in the vague border regions between these three beers, so I have listed it here as amber.
Very dark brown red, almost black, it has a pale tan head slowly shrinking to a foamy ring, leaving a few weak wisps of lace.
Aroma is malty and toasty with hints of chocolate, faint mild coffee, leafy wood, generally a full-bodied but gentle dark toasty character with subtle elements underneath.
Taste is excellent, rather like a dark brown ale or porter, darker toast, hints of dark caramel, burnt sugar, light brandied raisin, light dry chocolate, black pepper and a spicey-woody bitterness balancing. Tending slightly to the sweet side up front, the bitterness really joins to balance by the finish, leaving it very nicely balanced in all respects, flavourful, with good, firm character and light complexity, while being extremely drinkable. Fell is good, not oily, not watery, firm and perfect for a good, characterful but easy-drinking beer.
