Cardinal of Wood Island from Lavery. Purchased 0n 4/1/21 for $ 4.00 (Including tax) for 16 oz can ($ 0.250/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. In reefer at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 29/1/21.
Undated can. Served at 47.8 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 54.1 degrees.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), slight haze.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), opaque. When rear-lite, translucent and hazy.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), baby powder, high density, short retention, leaving a 0.5 cm crown with three-dimensional lacing remaining as the head retracts, and a thick, rocky island as a partial cap. Second pour produces a 0.4 cm rocky head.
Lacing – Excellent! Torn curtain lacing which is three-dimensional in some spots
Aroma – 3 – Weak and slightly fruity, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with a burst of sweetness that almost instantly turns to chalky dankness and slight maltiness, no yeast. Subsequent drinks lack the burst of sweetness and the dankness is tuned down although some of the malt backbone is evident. A bit peachy. No alcohol (9.2 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. Slight gastric warming eventually begins. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery with a slightly oily after-feel, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated container) An odd brew from a brewery that, in my experience, is idiosyncratic.
