Gentle Excess from Lavery Brewing. 16 fl oz can, purchased 26/02/26 from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 4.25/$ 0.266/fl oz. In reefer at distributor, stored at 40 degrees F at home. Reviewed 11/03/26, review 3703. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Served at 54.6 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 61.7 degrees F.
Appearance – 4. Very stout-ish with an excellent head and lacing.
First pour – Amber Brown) (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same but some precipitate is visible. When rear-lit, same but deep amber at the edges.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.3 cm, aggressive center pour). Caramel lightening to sandy tan as it oxygenates, high density with rocks, average retention; the head drops to an irregular 0.5 cm crown fed by spotty carbonation, and a thin rocky cap. A large torn reticulum remains above the crown.
Lacing – Excellent! Inside of the glass is covered with multiple bands of near-microscopic to small bubbles, forming bands connected by short columns. The reticulum mentioned above is slowly disintegrating into very torn curtains.
Aroma – 3 – Moderate marshmallow with hints of maple. No cinnamon, no malt, no hops, no alcohol.
Flavor – 3.5 – Moderate, slightly bitter, maple. Maybe a ghostly presence of marshmallow but distinctly no cinnamon and no pecans. No malt, no hops, no alcohol (7 % according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Weak gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium: Approaching creamy: Soft carbonation.
Style: Fits BA description.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container) Uncredited label art. Unusually weak non-sweet maple drink – the marshmallow adds a nice, slightly sweet, counterpoint. Unfortunately, my favorite spice (cinnamon) is marked by its absence. Kudos for noting in the description that this brew is lactose free!
