A Pretentious Glass Company Dimpled Mug sparkles with the gem-clear, golden amber beer (SRM 6-8). The glistening appearance is spectacular below a long-lived, loose white foam. Lacing forms a coating that transforms the glass from top to bottom with each sip. Occasional tiny bubbles of carbonation slowly wander upward. This one has a very Autumnal appearance.
Sweet honey is mild, followed by lightly toasted malt. Earthy floral notes are a bit odd, yet smell so good. There is no fruit and no caramel, though it is crisp and clean.
The flavor continues the sweet/bitter balance, producing a very crisp effect. Lightly toasted malt leads to light grain flavors, followed by faint hops. There is also a cookie dough flavor. The finish is long and barely perceptible, just sublime.
Alcohol is well below expectations, yet still present against soft carbonation. The smooth, creamy texture works well with the medium body. It warms nicely, even though I was enjoying it on a cool October afternoon.
This is clearly the head of the class for Octoberfest beers this year. It may well be the most enjoyable Octoberfest I have ever had. This was made all the sweeter because I purchased it on a whim. It's a nice accompaniment to the sound of wind rattling the trees in the sunshine.
