From BeerAdvocate Magazine #72 (Jan 2013):
A bold brew, perhaps a bit too in your face rather than relaxed a subtle as the style is. The addition of the Goji berry while vague in the character unless you are familiar with its flavor still take the style into a different direction. Throwing Belgian-ish yeast at a beer does not make it a Sasion, a decent beer that just misses the mark.
STYLE: Saison
ABV: 7.0%
AVAILABILITY: Rotating
LOOK: Clear pale copper, minimal lacing
SMELL: Spicy, musty yeast, chalky, gummy, exotic fruit, estery, medicinal
TASTE: Very fruity, smooth, mild crispness, hint of clove, peppery, warming alcohol, medicinal phenols, slightly bitter, bready, nutty yeast, dried grass, vague berry character, dry finish

A: Pours a nice golden with tangerine like hues in the middle.
S: The smell has hints of roses, pepper and esters.
T: The flavors are very gentle but apparent on the buds. The flavors consisted of honey, pears, hints of light pepper and a toasty/sourdough finish.
M: A very crisp and dry beer that is really easy to consume. Tingles the taste buds.
O: A pretty decent saison with some yummy flavors. I wish the flavors were more pronounced though.

Beautiful golden color with a touch of amber. Nice nose of fruit and champagne. Tart like cider apples. A definite taste of the Belgian funky yeast makes a shy appearance. Light body but full flavor in the mouth. Rich flavored, a touch of sweetness, long but understated bitter aftertaste makes a good conclusion.
Just saw this out in bottle in San Diego so I was curious to try this version as well. Best of the Manzanita offerings, I think, but with such a clean and well-made beer they should be on to something.

I have to admit I have never had a saison style farmhouse ale before. I have read alot about how much goes into making them and what to expect, which may have set my standard a little high but to me this beer is just gross. it tastes like a mixture of bud and fat tire, yuck. it had a good creamy yellow color and poured nicely but i am not a fan of the smell or taste. this beer may have turned me against all saison beers unless someone can point to a good one. also this beer cost $7 for a 22 for that price I expect something great not this garbage.
