To make Joni, the second in our series of barrel-aged fruited sours, Brewmaster Eric Johnson started with his house golden ale base. It was primary fermented clean in stainless steel before transferred to Bordeaux wine barrels and inoculation with souring bacteria and aged for over a year. 40 pounds of cherries were added to each barrel and aged further. Each barrel produces unique flavor characteristics and only a few were hand-selected to create the tart, light, beautiful final beer, Joni.

500mL bottle picked up at the brewery. 13.00. Bottled 11/2016 but just released June 2017. Served in a Wild Heaven snifter.
Pours a hazy, strawberry milkshake muted red with a finger and a half of rosy pink head. Those thin bubbles crackle away quickly leaving a dead surface with just a few rather large chunks floating in suspension.
Smells of wet barrel funk, sour cherries, caramel and earth. The cherry is a bit more apparent as it warms.
An almost biting cabernet wine-like quality initially greets the palate. That vinous character is complemented by fruit skins, sour cherry, leather, fruit pulp, spoiled grain and some dull, earthy sugar.
Body is on the lighter side of medium with dull carbonation. The aftertaste is like sour cherry wine.
Another tasty wild ale from Wild Heaven's new barrel aged sour series. Joni has some pleasant cherry character on top of a solid pale sour base. Based on this and Emmylou I'm looking forward to seeing where Wild Heaven takes this series.
