To make Mavis, the third in our series of barrel-aged fruited sours, Brewmaster Eric Johnson started with his house golden ale base. Mavis is a mixed fermentation blend of Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus aged in Bordeaux barrels. Each barrel received an addition of a single fruit, blackberry, raspberry, or cranberry, and aged from 24-30 months in the wood. Each barrel produces unique flavor characteristics and only a few were selected and blended together to create Mavis.

Poured a rusty brownish red with no head or lacing, but not really expected from this type beer. Nose was a earthy fruit of the berry nature, mostly raspberry and blackberry and this carried over well into the taste. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and while not all that sour when compared to Flemish sours, was noticeable. A nice change of pace on a hot summer day

This looks exactly like what’s inside the bottle - raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries mashed together, watery look on the edges, and a head that disappears like hail on the ground in Texas.

The funky Brett aroma is forefront of the nose, with the three fruits in the background, and just a hint of wine barrels (my assumption).

The fruit flavors are much more forward on the taste, and the Brett adds to those flavors. If the mouthfeel was a little brighter, this would be outstanding, but it is still worthy of a spin.

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 13.99. 08/2017 bottle 1062 of 1208. Served in a Wild Heaven snifter. Enjoyed 11/16/17.

Pours a nearly opaque orange brown with a three quarter finger cap of loose white froth. Anything resembling head or retention vanishes within a couple minutes.

Smells of a sour berry patch and funky wine drenched wood. My nose keeps venturing to the glass, catching notes of raspberries, cranberries and blackberries in turn. Wine, soured pale grain, wet oak and an mild earth.

The flavor is not quite as sour as the nose hinted. The tart berries are certainly at the forefront but seemingly diluted. Interesting wine-forward hints of plum and grapefruit, soured pale malts, wet oak, funky Brett and a little earth.

Medium body with dull carbonation. The mildly sour finish is bursting with fruity berries, some dull Brett and a healthy dose of woodsy wine.

Another solid sour release from Wild Heaven. Mavis has a pleasant blend of Brett, berries and Bordeaux that I quite enjoyed. I’m glad to see them doing great work in this relatively new series of barrel aged sours.
