A- This pours an opaque black/dark brown color with a head that is tan/caramel in color. The head doesn't last very long and creates a ring around the glass, along with some unique swirly shapes ....carbonation looks to be dense and creamy in for lacing, well there is a nice grouping of small spheres of bubbly goodness that cling to the side and the overall appearance seems to be somewhat oily in nature. Not a shabby looking stout!

S- Dark roasted cocoa beans, dark chocolate bar, hints of black french pressed coffee, and some very deep cherry notes that reminds me of black forest cake! Toasted vanilla smoothness hits the nostrils later in the smell along with subtle licorice/anise spice....very pleasant to take in before tasting it!

T- Heavy, yet very creamy dark chocolate and unsweetened coffee that becomes pleasantly bitter on the lingers boldly! Very well balanced throughout and the hints of vanilla, molasses, licorice and very soft wood char offer a bold yet very flavorful delicateness!

M/O- This is velvety smooth on the palate, and while the carbonation can be zingy for a moment, it doesn't detract from the overall mouthfeel! Highly drinkable, and a very sociable beer that is full of flavor, reasonably heavy for a stout and for a 7.2% alcohol beer, the booze is extremely well hidden! I was lucky to find a single last bottle at the local store and am very pleased that I picked this one up! A highly recommended Van Isle Stout!!

Pitch black with a dark brown head; dissipates quickly. Very subtle aroma, mainly coffee and toffee with slightly boozy hints, subtly spicy. Robust coffee and alcohol flavour with a very smoky finish that lasts. Feel is smooth, dry and crisp and flattens out before the smoky finish. Overall the beer was enjoyable but I didn't really taste any licorice as the name suggests.

Day 2 of the Craft Beer Advent Calendar and kinda happy that this one is actually unique.

L: Black, with a nice white head.

S: Chocolate and licorice. With a slight amount of coffee as well.

T: Coffee with a very small anoint of licorice taste but more of a coffee and chocolate. Still a nice amount of roasted malts.

F: Light bodied with a slight amount of carbination.

O: A good beer for the second day of the beer advent calender.

Pours a near pitch black body with a chocolate brown head that rapidly dissipates, oddly to a thinner beige head about a millimeter thick. The scent is very heavy on coffee with a faint bit of chocolate, along with what I can only describe as a soy sauce aroma that I can't quite place, nor determine if I like it. Other than that there is not much true malt character on the nose, and I might get the faintest inkling of liquorice. The taste is very strong on dark chocolate, though again with very subtle liquorice notes, which I think should be desired. The feel is as well quite smooth, with no burn despite the high alcohol content. Overall this is an okay beer though I think it tries to accomplish too many goals at once.

Tasty selection from the 2015 Craft Beer Advent Calendar. Overall, I found this stout to be very dry, with lots of roasted malt and minimal licorice flavour. There is not much in the way of froth or carbonation, but that does not detract from the overall package. This is a great winter beer, and would be well suited to fighting off the chill of an ocean breeze.

This was a very decent beer-- not as licorice-y as I would have guessed, and that is a good thing.

The color? Black licorice. Makes sense. Nice tan head.
Sweetness with a bit of hoppiness and bitterness at the end. Slight licorice root flavor which does not detract from the overall flavor.
The mouthfeel was perfect for the style. Not watery, not syrupy.

Overall, a very good stout and well worth seeking out.

Had two 650 mL bottles from Courtenay on Vancouver Island.
It has thick black opaque body with little brown head. I get a salted licorice aroma with a spicy coffee, cocoa powder, and roasted malt. On the taste I am reminded of brunt wood. Licorice is most prominent in the aftertaste, but more like licorice root rather than candy licorice. The body is heavy with good carbonation. Overall, a good stout best described as "thick". The subtle licorice works well with the beer.

This is a dark black beer with a hefty brown-orange head. It smells toasty and molasses sweet. The taste is a contrast of sweet molasses and bitter chocolate. I am not noticing much of a licorice presence, but the taste is great. It is not quite as creamy as I expected, but it does have a nice crisp, warming feel. Good beer overall.
