We revved up the Melvin machine to maximum juice per minute for this hazy RIIPA. Additions of flaked oats and wheat create a pillowy mouthfeel, and massive amounts of Mosaic and Citra hops provide a juice box of ripe mango, passionfruit, papaya and pineapple flavors. Until next time…Cloudy 5 Gs.

This was really yummy, very citrusy on the nose with some light hoppy aromas, has a bursting grapefruit juice flavor at first but its thinning out a bit. Not the absolute pinnacle im sure but this was pretty solid, there is a slight funkiness im getting on the back half im not super into.

I've bitched about the preponderance of New England IPAs. Most are similar to this one. This one is probably the weakest brew I have tried from Melvin, though it is not at all a bad beverage.
It pours a fake-looking cloudy (like all of this kind, lately). The head and lacing are exceptional. Aroma and taste is the usual skunky hops with a bit more malty sweetness coming through than the usual New England IPA. Just a bit of funky and a little more body, it also finished balanced - not too much bite, and dangerously easy drinking.
Recommended. Some day I hope to get to the area to do some skiing or other touristy things and a closer visit to Melvin's origins.

CAN: 12 fl oz pull-tab. "RIIPA Series." Canned 03/12/20 or 03/13/20 (the ink is smudged). Label is an ugly green and white save for the art, which depicts the back of a red car with Wyoming plates.
8.2% ABV. "Imperial India Pale Ale." "Hazy IIPA." Per their website, it's 60 IBUs and is hopped with Mosaic & Citra.
Served cold into a nonic pint glass.
APPEARANCE: Unfiltered. Turbid. Body is a dull orange-copper...lacks vibrance, clarity, and life. Head is fluffy but creamy and coating with the usual white colour.
Appears well-carbonated. Not a standout appearance overall for an IIPA, but it's generally attractive.
AROMA: Not boozy at all, but it promises a big hop profile tempered by wheat. Citrus creamsicle, mango, papaya. Pale malt/2-row sweetness.
TASTE: Somewhat juicy but not crazily so (or, indeed, to the extent their label and marketing would want us to believe). Pale malts are joined by wheat to form its mellow malt backbone and it drinks rather smooth given the presence of oats. No trace of its 8.2% ABV is obvious.
It's big on hops, bringing plenty of citrus, creamsicle, and tropical fruit (mango, papaya, pineapple). But depth of hop flavour is rather limited which is surprising in an Imperial IPA...it seems the hop flavours are somewhat muted by the wheat and flaked oats.
In any case, it's well balanced and built with a nice hop profile. As it warms, I guess I get a hint of oniony hop character but it's different than the oniony flavour I sometimes pick up on in Simcoe-hopped beers.
Not piney, grapefruity, oily, resinous, herbal, or grassy.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, coating, somewhat soft, well carbonated, a bit pulpy, and of above average thickness and weight on the palate for an IIPA.
Not oily, gushed, hot, astringent, boozy, harsh, scratchy, or dragging.
OVERALL: In terms of IIPAs hopped with Mosaic and Citra, it's far from top tier, and one would certainly be better served going a bit farther South to Greeley, CO for the myriad better expressions of that premise from the likes of Weldwerks Brewing. I wouldn't knowingly buy this brew again given the wealth of superior beers in this oversaturated style lining store shelves, but it's a competent take on the style that relies on the tried and true harmony of Mosaic and Citra hops to good effect.

Review #1404
When I learned Melvin Brewing was located in Alpine, just down the road from me, I needed to go on a road trip. This was two years ago and fell in love with Melvin Brewing. The IPA variation that they are producing is on par with the best breweries. I have drunk at least a gallon of this beer and now decided to review it. This beer is not cheap, this can cost 4, but you get what you pay for. The artwork on the can is outstanding, I love the bumper stickers. Moving forward with the review.
The beer is 46 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The beer is a Double IPA. A massive two-fingered ivory head was created when I poured the beer in the glass. The retention of the beer is average. The head of the beer did leave some lacing around the glass as it dissipated. The foam was airy and frothy. The color of the beer is SRM 5, pale yellow with golden hues. As the name suggests, this beer is hazy.
The initial aromas in the beer are oranges, pine, grapefruit, and toasted crackers. Nosing further in the glass, I smell pineapple, floral esters, herbal, grass, and pears. The beer smells fresh, I do not detect any oxidation or carboard. The beer is ripe and vibrant.
The flavors in the beer are subtle juniper, grass, pine, resin, a hint of grapefruit, pears, pineapple, lemons, floral esters, honey, crackers, toasted bread, herbal like thyme, and earthiness. The high alcohol content is not noticeable. I do get a slight solvent note, but it is not in an off-flavor way.
The mouthfeel of the beer is astringent and dry.
The body of the beer is medium, medium carbonation, and fuller finish.
This beer is not quite a New England IPA. The beer does vary from the ripe citrus to add floral, honey, grapefruit, and pine. I think the beer is more of a hybrid and done well. The malt backbone is firm and holds well against the hops used. The beer sings with harmony. The high alcohol in this beer will sneak up on you. This is a well-made beer and a must-try. I am enjoying drinking this beer.

12oz can. Poured out a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of orange, pineapple and toasted caramel. Sweet tropical fruit taste with toasted caramel and a piney bitterness.

Draft at Alefort. Mildly hazy golden pour, small bubbly head. Aroma and taste are Hop forward, with gentle citrus notes. Light on the palate for a DIPA.

another killer hazy ipa melvin, who never seems to miss with anything, especially hoppy beer. this is delicious and drinkable for its boldness, even distinct from the crowd of these, which is increasingly hard to do. glad to have this around the boise area right now! its not all that cloudy, just lightly frosted looking, no visible sediment and with all the carbonation it looks quite light and delicate not starchy and dense, a short but persistent white head rests on top from the tap, a pretty beer has the hazy ones go. the aroma and flavor of this are awesome, very tropical and distinctive, with papaya, lemongrass, and passion fruit character from the hops to me, maybe some nelson, el dorado, or something from new zealand, maybe all of them, maybe none, its tough to tell, and i dont have any specifics on the beer, so i just stop thinking about it and enjoy it. the fruitiness is awesome, papaya and mango and orange, some sharper lemon and juniper later on as it warms, and a lemon lime soda lightness and effervescence the whole way that makes its alcohol strength seem impossible, on the dry side for a hazy at this size too. the quality is on par with the uniqueness, and in the end this is just downright delicious, i think its been different in previous batches, but its tasting amazing time time around. props to melvin for keeping the train of heady ipas rolling. this is awesome beer.

Yellow and hazy with lots of fine bubbled carbonation, topped with three fingers of white head.
Smells of malt, over ripe pineapple, and some dank notes.
The taste is of dankness, with weed, Greenleaf, some citrus notes, and a good malt backing.
Medium body with foamy carbonation. I got this in Reno and I’m drinking in Redding California July 24, 2019.
