they are calling this a pale ale, but it presents almost more like a fruited kettle sour, the acidity from the lime takes in that direction, which i guess suggests the use of real lime, but its way out of whack, and the malt is so light, and the hops lack so much bitterness, that this really doesnt drink anything like a pale ale, even a contemporary one, but its flavorful and summery anyway, perhaps overdone, but interesting, with cinnamon, vanilla, and a cool mix of hops in what must be the dry hop. blonde and close to clear, unassuming and real light looking, average white head and good carbonation from the tap. the nose is pure lime, sharp and tangy, cocktail vibes with the vanilla and the light melon and elderflower note im picking up from the cashmere and motueka. i get very little cinnamon in aroma and flavor, and im fine with that, it would seem like a clash to me anyway, everything else is bright and crisp, save the vanilla, which is also somewhat subtle, and cinnamon would make this more warm and cozy, not what i need in a lime beer, pie themed or otherwise. the malt is really light, the hops are oily and compatible with the lime, the whole thing is fresh, but its flavored to an almost not beery place, like the lime dominates, and there is little room for the other elements in play. i think the thought is better than the execution, but if you like super lime forward beers, give this a try. cool its a pale base not a lager of some kind which is way more common, but i wish the hops were a bit more robust in the flavor mix. either way i am glad to see a new one from melvin, have these guys fallen off a cliff in the last year or what?!
