Very Good
Saison D'BrettSaison D'Brett
Notes: Saison d’Brett is a batch of our Flagship Saison aged in our 800 gallon foudre. The oak from the foudre complements the fruit and spice flavors from the saison yeast as well as the funkiness contributed by the addition of brettanomyces yeast.

Notes of passion fruit, tangerine, subtle spices, and just a hint of oak.

Pairs well with dramatic entrances.

Starts off as a clear sunshine orange with a fizzy white head, becomes increasingly hazy towards the end of the bottle. The nose has hay and barnyard funk, tropical fruit like papaya, mango, and peppery spice, all perfectly balanced and blended, yet distinct. The flavor continues along this path, the juicy fruit taking on a sweet, candied quality while on the whole it remains dry. A faint crackers-and-cheese taste is added, as well as a warm vanilla flavor. As balanced, juicy, spicy, funky, and all-around delicious as it is, the feel is the most intriguing part. Silky smooth barely touches on it; its divine. There's hardly any carbonation, and yet it isn't flat. It's a little syrupy, but not sticky, full bodied but not heavy. Silky smooth and fluid.
Wonderful. It's firmly a spicy, funky saison, but was able to add enhanced fruitiness as well as mild wood notes. Hands down the best saison I've ever had, and amongst the best brews of any kind. This beer is magic.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Best by 1/22/19, had 1/31/19. I’ve done worse.

Pours a hazy golden yellow, with a two inch plus foamy head with great retention and thick foamy lacing. Aromas of Belgian yeast, pineapple, malt, black pepper, some wheat, spices- coriander, for one, a little funk and Brett, light stone fruit, light oak. Similar flavors- pineapple, malt, spices- again, coriander, oak- more as it warms, less yeast than the aroma, light Brett and funk, light wheat, a hint of vanilla. Has a light hop bitterness throughout. Smooth, a good light to medium body. Not over carbonated, but feels a little fizzy.

Nicely balanced between the base, hops and Brett, although overall there’s not much Brett or funk. Has a bigger hop presence than expected, but it’s a good result. Drinks easy, very enjoyable, worth a purchase.

A: The beer is hazy amber yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high off white head that consistently left a short head covering the surface after it died down.
S: Light aromas of funk are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of Brett funk along with strong notes of oak from the barrel aging and slight hints of spices towards the finish.
M: It feels light to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that this beer did a good job with incorporating the Brett as you could still taste the underlying saison.

Bottled on 1/19/2017. This was listed as retired, but obviously they have made newer batches.

A: Pours an orange/yellow color with a light haze. Ar first a dense two finger white head forms and gently recedes to a ring. Light lace is left behind.
S: An awesome and fragrant nose. Basement like funk and light wood hit me first. Then a mixture of citrus and passion fruits. Like melons, tangerines, orange and lemon zest.
T: Like the nose, I get the lightly funky Brett up front. Basement like musk, slightly peppery/spicy, just a touch of oak. Then the fruit flavors come into play. With passion and citrus that matches the nose. Tangerines, orange and lemon zest specifically. This is wonderful.
M/O: A medium body with effervescent carbonation. Crisp, vibrant and smooth at the same time. So enjoyable and easy to drink. Tons of character that makes me want to keep coming back.

A fantastic example of the style, and something I would highly recommend. I hope to see this more often around town, and a good rival to Boulevard Saison Brett, but with a touch more passion fruit character. This is excellent, if you have not got my drift yet...

Thanks to Francois for sharing.

Big pillowy head, soapy lacing, hazy milky blond color.

Nose nice Brett, some farmhouse saison aromas, light spices and citrus, toasty blond malts, little lemon

Taste nice funk Brett, light saison, farmhouse, spices, lemony, citrus, grainy malts, toasty, sweet candy malts, light floral spicy hops. Fair bitterness.

Mouth effervescent carb, little sticky syrupy, med bod.

Overall nice, could have been a bit better but still nice.

1-21-2013. Hazy light yellow with a thin white collar. Aromas of funk, grass, lemon, a touch of cracked pepper, melon. Musty and funky. Ample brett character throughout the aroma and flavor. Nice.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into cervoise. Best by 2019.01.22.
A: Pours a nice clear yellow with 1-2 inch bubbly white head with decent retention.
S: Tropical fruit and spicy yeast. Guava, soft mango, tangerine, soft toasted oak, white pepper, lime, and hints of passion fruit and vanilla.
T: A burst of tropical fruit (guava, lime, mango, and passion fruit) quickly followed by soft oak and vanilla with hints of sour fruit and spicy (white pepper) yeast. With warming, ginger and almond notes emerge.
M: Medium body. Moderately viscous. Tropical fruit sweetness, peppery yeast, and softening oak and vanilla. Lacking the crisp bite of a typical saison (more soft and rounded).
D: A nicely constructed brew with an interesting twist thanks to the foudre-aging. Refreshing with good sessionability.

L: Poured into a tulip glass as recommended. Beautiful orange body with a white 1.5 inch head - fluffy and slow to dissipate.

S: Juicy, mouth-watering sweet brett - bringing the funk.

T: Barnyard funk, slightly sweet, but mostly moderate sour.

F: Dry with light carbonation.

O: A great brett funky saison! Better flavor sitting out on the counter for a couple

A new 'pilot batch' offering from FW; an updated variation to their Brett Dream, which I never tried. Gonna re-review this since time has definitely been this beers friend....gave the brett a chance to mature.

Pours a hazy yellow with a huge, creamy white head and nice lacing. Aroma offers some belgian yeast, some tartness in the form of lemon from the brett, and a kick of some spice from the yeast, and a touch of breadiness. Flavor followed suit with maybe a little pineapple/tropical fruits action thrown in there as well. An active, crisp mouthfeel. Overall, solid beer from Funkwerks here. For a brett saison it doesn't quite stand up to the best of the style, but still very much enjoyable. Would happily drink this again.

Bottle dated 1/21/13

A: Pours a pale orange, almost golden yellow, murky body. Gusher alert! Took about 25 minutes to pour the full 750ml bottle into two glasses because of the carbonation and aggressive head build-up. Foamy, bubblebath-esque pillowy head hangs around for a while but slides down the glass without much lacing.

S: Tons of brett right upfront. A bit of oak. Some citrus - lemons mostly. Hard to smell much beyond the brett, but that's often typical of brett beers.

T: Funky brett follows the nose, but more complexity than the waft suggests. Lemons and white grapes - has a strong champagne taste.

M: Light body. HEAVY carbonation. Dry. Drinks like a dry white wine - like an oaky chardonnay.

O: Im really glad I got to try this one. I'm sure it's changed drastically over a year in the cellar, but Brett beers age magnificently.
