Gifted a bottle / Thanks Jeremy.
Pours a rich dark mahogany with orange copper and red accents to light. Full white creamy head that quickly dissipates with a slight amount of residual lacing. Nose has plenty of caramel, leather, dried dates and fig…. Maybe hint of dried orange peel. Barrel present and pretty light… in a good way. Pleasant not overbearing.
Taste mirrors nose with a bit of unnecessary hop bitterness. Wood stands out a bit more. Overall quite tasty.
Having just had the regular Scotch ale on tap at ND… I find the body has thinned and their is a bit of bright carbonation I did not notice in the much smoother draft unbarreled ale. Not that unusual with ale malts often absorbed a bit by wood in barrel aging… and this is bottled not draft. Regardless while not as smooth as hoped, it is still has a very nice medium full body if a bit bright.
Overall I think this is a very good Wee Heavy, and the Willett barrel aging while not highly pronounced is still evident, complementary and delicious.
Nice job!
