Very Good
Modern IPAModern IPA
Notes: This is a tasty tribute to a beloved and iconic beer style - the India Pale Ale. The style goes 200 years back - has been through every spectrum of the flavor palette and had it’s ups and downs on the IBU scale. This time around we re-created a contemporary style IPA - basically the taste of the perfect IPA right now. Understated hop flavors, fruity and crisp. The future is now.

Presentation: 12 oz. can with a batch number on the bottom but no dates. Served in a Rastal Craft Master glass.

Appearance: The one finger head stays around for a little bit and leaves behind a thin foam ring and a lot of lacing in big patches all over the glass.

Smell: It's a fruity aroma of grapefruit, peach and pineapple. A hint of malty sweetness shows up in the background.

Taste: There's a big, fruity flavor of tangerine, peach and green grapes. Some floral notes and a touch of malt show up as it goes down.

Mouthfeel: It's very smooth and moderately light but there's substance, it's not watery at all. Carbonation is medium low.

Overall: An easy to drink beer with a lots of hoppy, fruit character.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a Shaker pint glass, there is no "best by" date that I can find.

APPEARANCE: pours a cloudy, straw color with one-finger off-white head that quickly dissipated until a thin, unbroken layer of small bubbles remained, there is significant lacing on the glass, medium carbonation.

SMELL: brown sugar, bread, flowers and tropical fruit.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet brown sugar then bread and tropical fruit like pineapple and mango.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: this is a very good beer, the name says it all, I would buy this again and would recommend to anyone who enjoys "modern" IPA.

L: Poured from a can to a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a hazy texture. There was a half inch of foamy head that lasted an average amount of time. Fair lacing.

S: A good aroma of hops, citrus, malt, and caramel.

T: Tasted of a fair shot citrus fruits (grapefruit, orange), some light caramel notes, a hint of malt (in the finish), a lot of hops, and tropical fruits (mango, passion fruit). A fairly sweet, well-balanced flavor all around. Not overly hopped - definitely restrained by the presence of fruit. Tasty.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a prickly finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: While this beer doesn't exactly break any new ground, it is well made. Very much drinkable.

Appearance: Pours slightly hazy and honey colored with a two finger head; the bubbles in the foam are unusually large and it looks very porous; splashy lacing as the head descends

Smell: Tropical fruit and citrus with floral tones

Taste: Pineapple and mango forward, with tangerine and onion flavors building, through the middle; subtle tones of melon and berry underneath; juicy, with modest bitterness, in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Very enjoyable, with a nice balance between the tropical fruit and citrus

aside from the lemonade ones, we can forgive those eventually, the hoppy stuff evil twin has been responsible for lately has been exceptional. this is a little less east coasty than the full sentence name ones that have been popping up, but it has a very pungent hop nose, a citrusy and vibrant hop flavor, and not more malt than is necessary to support it. its balanced in a new school way, and runs all the bases pretty well. pale blonde in color, sunny, without any of the common caramel or deeper crystal malts apparent, with a frothing white head from the tap, lively and pretty. nose and taste of citrus peel, pine bitterness, green tea, light floral honey, and dry cereals. its basic, but its fresh and its good, hops like amarillo and citra come to mind, although so do the columbus and simcoes of the world, this is robust but fresh, only lightly bitter in the end, and quite evolved. i thought the retro ipa was pretty lackluster, and not just as a product of the relic palate, but as a beer on the whole, just less good, this is way better, clean and crisp, easy drinking but full of flavor, and with a lot more staying power i think. good to very good when fresh. again, insanely stoked to have all this evil twin stuff available all of a sudden...

Cloudy, light gold color. Modest head; good, thick streaks of lace.

Prickly citrus rind aroma. Not quite dry but the malt is soft, almost flowery.

The taste sweeter and less hoppy than the smell let's on. Full bodied which is enhanced by a lighter carbonation level. The finish while predominantly bitter still has a (quickly fading) solid malt presence. Moderately long bitter aftertaste.

2016 release; drank 6/22/16 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque orange appearance.

Huge, noisy off-white head; frothy lace.

Orange peel, grapefruit & mild caramel notes in the nose.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Orange peel & dry grapefruit flavors up front; mild caramel notes on the finish.

Pleasant flavors, but the dryness took the fun out of this one. Just OK.

Some great reviewers like this beer, and I've liked all the brewer's offerings which have our hard Adirondack water as the core.
A) Casual light golden with foggy haze, short head, medium lace and carbonation.
S) nose is mainly fresh tropical and herbal florals in front of honey white bread and caramel malts. Clean. Think Moma.
T) Hops bolder on the tongue, like a fizzy they come forward with colors: mango, passionfruit and kiwi. Which are moderated by grassy, floral, hempy and grapefruit hops, that land your palate in a clean space. Think Moma party.
F) Cleansing, mineral feel. Leaves you refreshed, a citric cleanser tinged with grassy green hoppiness.

On tap at the Pour Taproom (SC).
Pours with a slightly hazy golden body that's topped by a creamy, semi-durable white head. Medium+ carbonation; medium-light body. Lots of citrus and cut grass in the aroma and flavor, but The flavor is milder and cleaner than the aroma suggests. Mild bitterness for style.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Semi-cloudy medium to light golden pour. 2 fingers of foamy white head. Great lacing.

S: Citrus and grapefruit.... light malts and sweetness.

T/F: Grains and light malts form a solid backbone for a citrusy bittersweet hop profile. Tropical fruits, grapefruit, and faint pineapple. Bitterness well hidden.... medium in body... sticky on the tongue and very easy drinking.

O: A very nice fruity/citrus hop forward IPA. Easy drinking... tasty.... and at 6% you can enjoy a few of these at a time. Really nice beer.

Nice IPA. The first sips are more interesting than the followings. At first is about melon, citrus, pine. Then it's quite floral and lighter in taste. The body is interesting all along

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. can into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.

A: Moderately hazy light gold, with a good amount of visible carbonation. Forms a finger's worth of foamy white head with great retention.

S: Tropical fruits, melon, and biscuit malts. Lesser notes of citrus and dank hops. It's not a huge aroma, but nice enough for what’s there.

T: Tropical fruits, tangerine-forward citrus, and melon. A biscuit malt backbone, but no hints of caramel or toffee or toasted character – only a canvas for the hops. It ends with melon and a kiwi fruity bitterness, but there’s also a lean towards some naked alpha bitterness as well.

M: Average body for an American IPA. Good carbonation sensation, and an average alcohol presence.

O: I’ll enjoy the cans I have, but I won’t likely buy this again. There are too many other "as-good-or-better" local options on the shelf, a good percentage of which are canned as well. And, while not overwhelming, I wouldn't miss it if the the alpha-bitterness wasn't there. Still, it's nothing to turn your nose up at if you saw it on tap.

I was really looking forward to this IPA. When I think of modern IPA it's in the vein of a Vermont/New England style or any ipa that is more hop forward, less bitter in the finish and likely cloudy. Flavoring and aroma hops late in the boil with no lingering powerful drying bitterness. Most importantly a big juicy hop profile.

This one didn't make the grade in that dept. Not saying it is a bad beer by any means. The nose is similar to many typical IPAs. Grapefruit, pine with some fruitiness but much less than expected. Had a very nice slight haze and a solid head with retention and legs.

Flavor wise I got mostly grapefruit rind, faint tart tropical fruit and a fairly long pithy dry finish. It was standard IPA flavor but tasty.

Now this can could be older but who would know because some batch number and cryptic numbers. (super annoying especially with a beer that should be enjoyed as fresh as possible to get intended experience from a modern juicy IPA)

Overall a solid IPA that didn't deliver on the "modern" juicy less bitter promise. oh well

L: Hazy pale golden color with a thin clinging head.

S: Lots of grapefruit, citrus, and pine.

T: Similar to the nose, pine and tropical citrus fruits up front. Finishes bitter and grassy. A little bit of a malty backbone, but very hop dominant overall.

F: Moderate carbonation and somewhat thin mouthfeel.

O: I think they were going for a stereotypical modern IPA, and I think they nailed it. Plenty of "dank" hops and tropical fruit flavors. Hops are dominant, and is bitter enough that it would likely make most people 20-30 years ago cringe. Overall pretty good.

This'll be a great beer for warm weather. Citrusy and crisp with a sharp finish. Not boozy at all. Very refreshing. That being said, it's good not great. Reminds me a little bit of alpha King. I like the beer don't get me wrong but it's not necessarily world class. This is around a month old so it's still relatively fresh. That being said, glad I got to try this and would probably pick more up if I were going to a party in the summer

Can from ABV.

Initially clear, this turns to be a hazy, orange beer with a dense, off-white head that leaves lacing as it slowly recedes. The nose is bright and fruity, quite tropical and citrusy but also noticeably bitter. Minimal malt, though there is a little bit of honey. There's a nice blend of mandarin, mango and a little papaya. The palate opens bitter and fruity, a nice blend of pith and fruit. Oranges, mandarin, mango and pine are all present. While not sweet, there is a medium body here, a dextrinous feel that works well with the hops. Drying, bitter and fruity on the finish, this beer is moderately carbonated and quite excellent on the palate. Quite yummy.

drank from the can. tasted just like OB Dale's Pale Ale... which I had in the fridge. Opened one up and compared side by side. they taste virtually the exact same. Strong malty base with some decent dry-hopped bitterness.

i don't have anything wrong with that. They're both very good examples of the IPA. but a for $9 I can get 4 Modern IPA's... or 6 Dale's Pale Ales. Get your money's worth and just by Dale's.

12oz can poured into a pint glass.

Hazy pale gold in color with massive fluffy white head with great retention, it stands proud before slowly subsiding to eternal frothy crown along with plenty of lacing ring, patch, and spot on the glass-side. Carbonation seems to be high.

Fresh, juicy, yet fruity with aromas of grapefruit, citrus, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, lemon, pine, and resin, all of these are derived from good hop quality. There is also some peppery spice too from hop while malt provides notes of bread and caramel.

The resiny bitterness is upright and stays until the start to finish of each sip. Grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, pine, and citrus are nicely mingled with some zest while malt is there too as a support with some sweet bread and caramel. Overall, the flavor yields a pleasant taste of hoppy goodness while not forget to bring malt to reinforce.

Light to medium body with smooth mouthfeel from high carbonation through the palate, the feeling is crisp, clean, and very refreshing while finish is dry.

This beer is a very good example of how the new world IPA should be with all the qualities of the mighty hop as well as malt pairing being great combination.

The colour is gold, the liquid somewhat hazy. The four finger head is compact and off-white; it sinks very slowly leaving some thick lacing on the glass.

The smell is bitter-sweet with lots of citric juice and peels. Mango, bananas, bitter almonds and orange marmalade. Some clean alcohol. It is fresh and balanced.

The taste is fruity with clean sweetness, growing citric juicy flavours: Oranges, grapefruits, mangos, bitter oranges and ripe peaches. It is much less bitter than I had expected. Grapefruit peel-like harsh flavours. Medium body. The aftertaste got more bitterness, some passing alcohol, citric inner pees, green bananas and French loaf. The finish is perfumed and fruity with some bitterness, banana candy and a hint of baker’s yeast.

The carbonation is smooth; the small bubbles are light and short-lived. The liquid is smooth.

A drinkable and fruity “Vermont IPA”. I had really liked some more bitterness.

From a 12oz can:

Appearance: Hazy yellow, good head.

Smell: Tropical fruits, pineapple, melon, grapefruit.

Taste: Moderate bitterness, lots of fruit flavor, pretty grapefruit-y.

Overall: Picked up a 4 pack for about $5, nice. I was pretty impressed by this beer, I got a lot of tropical fruit flavor along with some old-school grapefruit. Haven't tried the Retro IPA companion but probably won't due to age now. Solid IPA.

This one pours a slightly hazy orange-ish color, with a small head, and just a little bit of lacing.

This smells like soft peach, a bit of floral thing, some perfume, and grapefruit.

This is a decent stab at the "modern IPA" style- however you define it. They went for soft fruity hop flavors- peach and grapefruit dominate. It's got a little bit of a slick soapiness to it on the finish that isn't great though. There really isn't any malt character.

This is lighter bodied- a little slick, as previously mentioned, with a normal level of carbonation.

Pretty decent job here- not the best IPA from Evil Twin (who don't even really do IPAs that well, generally), but I certainly enjoyed it.

L: Very hazy light golden color, half finger slightly off white head, messy lacing, no visible carbonation.

S: Tropical fruits, citrusy, hoppy.

T: Hoppy, citrusy. Slightly bitter on the back end. Very balanced taste but too balanced for my liking.

F: Drinkable and refreshing on a hot summer night.

O: An ok IPA but goes back on the pile with other thousands of IPAs that no one will ever hear of.

Can poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours moderately hazy golden yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and leaves a little lacing.

S: Pine, zesty citrus, tropical fruit, passion fruit and a mango, a little crackery malt, and a touch of light caramel sweetness.

T: Citrus zest grapefruit, lemon lime, pine, a bit of tropical fruit, mango and passion fruit, crackery malt, and just a little light caramel sweetness. The tropical fruit really starts to come out as it warms.

M: Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, crisp.

O: Pretty much hits the nail right on the head for a modern IPA. Light malt with a heavy dose of hops. I might not be the biggest fan of the direction IPAs like this are going (I prefer a little more malty base.) but it's still a darn solid brew.
