Collaboration with Omnipollo

A refreshing drink often associated with child nostalgia to others a pop-cultural symbol of female emancipation. Whatever the association we teamed up with two Swedes, Henok and Karl of Omnipollo to squeeze out a tasty, tempting and deceivingly well balanced IPA with sweet and sour notes of old-fashioned memories. This time around we added coffee and twist of well designed ideas by Martin Justesen.

So I picked this up because it was available as a single, so much easier to take a chance on something (especially from Evil Twin, which is usually at the higher end price point wise) kinda weird when you don't have to commit to 4 or 6 of them.

Anyhoo, pours looking like standard yellow golden colored beer, white head, nothing in the appearance would make you think coffee, or lemonade for that matter. The aroma did reveal some of those coffee and lemonade notes, nothing too dazzling, but it checks the boxes that say lemonade and coffee. Might throw around some grapefruit rind too.

Taste wise, hey, I don't hate this as much as I thought I could. Relatively easy drinking, its like a coffee with a twist of lemon, story checks out. Its relatively light bodied. The alcohol isn't pushing it. I guess from the standpoint of balance, there aren't a lot of hops or malt here, coffee and lemon tend to be on the acidic side, so it leans that way moreso than balanced. It was decent and worth the price of admission. If you like lemon or coffee, you won't hate it. But don't come around here no more looking for this to be a hop bomb.

Leave it to Evil Twin and Omnipollo to combine lemonade and coffee. Smells like fresh lemons, perhaps a shandy. Taste upfront is as expected: sour, lemony flavors which are exaggerated by the huge carbonation. A residual almost spice-like bitterness persists after swallowing, not in the most pleasant way. Ultimately, we found the coffee-lemonade combination to be interesting, but fails to satisfy more than a more typical sour or shandy.

12 oz can at the 2019 BanjoBque.
This sounds like a bad idea. ... Lemonade, coffee and hoppy beer? Well, it's better than one might fear, but even a cold can on a very hot day is just OK at best.

A thanks to the commander of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of coffee, lemons. Taste is big coffee up front, light lemons at the finish, very little bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is decent, but it doesn't feel like I just drank an AIPA.

Poured to an Ora et Labora taster.

A: Body is mildly opaque with a dark orange coloration. The head is totally non-existent and this doesn't look quite right so far.
S: The aroma is very strong of instant coffee with some hops in the back, which, I must say, doesn't go along very well. Even though I like Omnipollo pushing forward some beer flavours, this is absurd to say the least.
T: Taste starts off very very sweet, like if you had an orange juice concentrate and didn't mix water in followed by some instant coffee flavour. In the back, a minor hoppy tone.
M: Body is low. Carbonation is actually perfect. Alcohol is totally unnoticeable. Bitterness is low but mixing coffee bitterness with hops is not good.
O: Again, I love when the limits of beer are pushed. But this is absurd.

I'm not sure why so many people are having trouble with this one. Have you never had lemon meringue pie and coffee before? Those are pretty much exactly what you're getting here, in a super refreshing summer-shandy type of beer. It definitely doesn't come across as anything resembling an IPA to me, but it's a fantastic sipper for the porch.
