Evil Twin Brewing "Hot Toddy-Ish"
1 pint can, coded ETHT-2AH 888"
$5.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a barleywine? Awesome! I was just expecting a dessert beer. It's 10% alcohol by volume according to the label. It's made with "natural flavors" though, and not real ingredients like cinnamon or honey. OK, let's see... it's a hazy dark amber-copper color with visible particulate in suspension. The head is a finger's width of creamy off-white foam. The aroma is quite interesting. There's Bourbon, tea, honey, and something that alludes to lemon but doesn't actually smell like lemon. On to the flavor... well the aroma is a pretty good indicator of how it will taste. I'm getting some brown sugar, and a hint of cinnamon, and even an herbal note in the back. The lemon never emerges although there is a tartness to it that balances the brown sugar sweetness. I would certainly not call this a barleywine, but just a strong beer. There's not a lot of bitterness to it but neither did I expect any. It's interesting. I should also note that I don't get any more alcohol out of it beyond a very light presence. In the mouth it's light-medium in body and gently crisp-then-smooth. Looking back, the head held up fairly well at first, but steadily diminished, and in the end there was very little lacing left behind. So, what to say about this beer? It's certainly unique; I've never had a beer like this. And it's tasty. It's a sipper for sure, but as an after dinner drink to nip at I'd go for it again. It's well made, and I'd suggest giving it a try.

12 ounce can into a tulip snifter. Had 1/20/19.

Pours an orange/amber, a little hazy, with a two inch foamy head with good retention and lots of thick foamy lacing. Aromas of cinnamon, lemon peel, cloves, malt, smoke, some lemon, light toffee. Flavors of cinnamon, cloves, malt, lemon peel, smoke, some cherries and caramel. Can says it’s supposed to be boozy and have bourbon like flavors, but not my can. Smooth, well carbonated, a decent medium body that’s thin for the style.

It’s an ok beer, but if they insist it’s a barleywine, it’s a bad barleywine. Have had two other hot toddy beers that were much better. This is unfocused, has a thin feel and little complexity. This is not up to the usual Evil Twin standard. Looked really good, though.

16 oz can - not dated

Hot Toddy-ish has a thin off-white head that sat atop of a lightly cloudy dark copper colored body. The head quickly dissipated. The nose was sweet, of caramel, light honey and malt. The taste is very similar to the nose. Hot Toddy-ish is sweet from the honey and caramel. Malt is present and a light spice - possibly cinnamon is also noted. Mouth feel is high-medium and lighter for a Barley Wine. The BW has moderate carbonation. There is a light alcohol warming at the finish.

Overall, a different take on a Barley Wine and a blonde one at that. Very drinkable for its style - I liked it.

First off, I expect more from Evil Twin. Pours a slightly murky amber with no head and no lacing. Smells sweet with some cinnamon, caramel, citrus and a bit of oak. Taste is also very sweet. Flavors of honey, caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, lemon, orange, a bit of bourbon and oak. Light bodied, watery mouth feel, no carbonation. Overall way too sweet, drinks more like a bad dessert wine.

Look: It is dark in color with some orange. Head retention is good and the head is creamy and off white.

Smell: There are aromas of toffee and a bit of butterscotch. It has some orange marmalade like qualities in the nose as well. There are some low herbal and woody elements.

Taste: There are some toffee and orange marmalade like qualities that are strong in the taste. There are some low wood and herbal elements in the background. The alcohol is a bit sharp and creates a cough syrup like quality to it.

Feel: It is thick and syrupy with the alcohol being a bit sharp.

Overall, the combinations just didn't seem to work together that well for me being a bit sharp in the alcohol and a bit syrupy tasting like cough syrup with the same texture.

Looked absolutely disgusting with little white things floating all throughout it. Tasted too sweet. Couldn’t finish because I was too turned off by all the floating shit in it. Big disappointment.

16 oz can poured into a snifter.

Appearance
Murky, yeasty amber. Short bone white head.

Nose
Caramel, butterscotch, lemon, cinnamon, and candy sugar.

Taste
Huge honey and caramel flavors bordering on a mead. Light toffee and butterscotch with hints of cinnamon, blended Bourbon, and lemon juice. Touches of earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel
Full bodied, warming, silky, smooth, chewy, creamy, and semi-sweet.

Overall
I'm happy to see anything other than IPAs and Coffee Stouts nowadays, especially a Blonde Barleywine, or any Barleywine for that matter.
