Remember when Europeans would drop a slice of lemon into the Coke and we thought it was such a novel idea that we'd do it too? Evil Twin remembers and decided to revive that dead idea with a cola-inspired beer for both better and worse.
Cola pours an expected cola-like brown before building an unexpected frothy tan cap. As the "almost" scents of cocoa, nuttiness, caramel and spice come together in that unforgettable cola aroma, it's early taste is nearly spot on of that of cola with caramel, sorghum, syrup and candied nuttiness.
But the middle palate sees that taste fade into a nearly brown ale direction while the cola spice rise to give the sweetness a sense of balance and intrigue. An under current of lemon and lime cuts through the syrups and provide an uncharacteristic balance of acidity that's ill-placed but somehow still welcomed. A pepper spice follows to bring the session back around to those cola impressions.
Cloying, sweet and syrupy in texture as well, the beer finishes malty and medium-full. With malt starches and without the brazen carbonation rates of cola, this beer sits heavy on the tongue and makes drinkability a bit tough. A linger of sorghum sweetness leaves the palate thirsty and fatigued.
