Served in a tulip
Gorgeous appearance. The hazy, ruby colored body was topped by an inch-tall, tight and fluffy, light pink head that slowly fell to swirls atop the liquid. Some streaky, patchy lacing trickled along the glass.
The aroma was really unique. Passionfruit hit me first, followed by fragrant almond notes. Good dose of nutmeg too. Soon, however, a medical quality appeared and really took over. Cherry cough medicine, and/or perhaps some type of artificially flavored juice box, came to mind. Quite sweet and also rather tart. Bit of white chocolate too. Unfortunately, there were no hoppy/IPA qualities whatsoever. Later, the baking spice (nutmeg/cinnamon) notes intensified. The almond also came and went in waves. Same with the passionfruit, but to a lesser degree.
The flavor profile tasted like a mixture of a Berliner weisse and a Hi-C juice box. Like the nose, this was also rather medicinal. Cherry cough medicine for sure. Some raspberry too. Tart and also somewhat sweet. Lemon notes appeared in the center. Moderately sour. Touch of passionfruit. More cherry and lemon on the back end and the finish. Baking spice notes and some lemon-like acidity lingered after the swallow.
Light, frothy, fluffy mouthfeel. Surprisingly thin in body for the style. The liquid contained a spritzy, fairly aggressive effervescence that might work well for a Berliner weisse or a Gose but not an IPA.
At $26 a four pack, I was anticipating this beer to be pretty amazing, but unfortunately that was not the case. Though it bills itself a sour IPA with passionfruit, dragonfruit, raspberry, almond, cinnamon and nutmeg (and then more of each ingredient in this “special edition”), it drank like a adjunct laden and artificial tasting Berliner weisse.
