When is a Berlinerweiss not a Berlinerweiss? When its a massive fruit beer. Evil Twin imperializes a Northern German Sour Wheat Ale and throws a copious amount of cherry, mango and orange at it for beer that's more like a jam.
ET Left Home 3 pours with the visual viscosity of a mauve fruit smoothie and one pass of the nose does nothing to dispute those comparisons. Fruity with a dark berry melange, the nose is tangy, winey, cidery and rife with reduced fruit density. Similarly to taste, the striking amount of fructose yields a creamy, rich, starchy sweetness that's redolent with pastry and pie filling.
Dominant with the cherry flavors, its that pitted dark fruit that commands the most attention with a robust richness in taste equipped with cherry tartness and a host of dark berry similarities. Any tropical or citrus influence only acts to provide a succulent, exotic or zesty complement to the cherry. While the taste remains cloyingly sweet, its balance of sourness shines in the waning taste for a piquant and acidic twang to close.
Full bodied and drinking like cherry glaze, the beer is basically a diabetic shock in a glass. With very few similarities to actual beer, there's every reason to criticize this fruit bomb of an ale. But what isn't disputable is that its absolutely delicious. Shy of true imperial strength, the beer lingers long and plush with cherry pulp and bracing sourness in tow.
