Pours jet black, slithering into the glass like a lethargic snake. It coats the edges, with dark brown tears that stream down the glass like a sullen teenager.
Nose is hesitant, with a lot of earthy barrel, dark roast coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. It’s good, but uninspired. This has potential, but I’m cautiously optimistic.
Oh my god. You need to wait 4-5 seconds before the true flavors emerge. Your patience pays off. Just wait.. wait.. Wait for the perfect balance of oaky tannin, roasted malts, dark cherry bourbon and high-cacao dark chocolate finish. It’s one of the most complex finishes I’ve ever had from a beer. How they manage the tannins with 4 years of barrel aging is beyond me.
Mouthfeel is flat, but also ultra dense and smooth.. It helps provide some richness while still maintaining its drinkability.
I’ll be honest.. Evil Twin spent years brewing stuff that was basic AF.. Their barrel program in NYC has emerged as one of the most underrated in the US. Their Great Northern series has produced some of the most complex beers I’ve ever had. This is one of the best. Brilliant.
