Poured from a can into a tulip glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep golden color with a puffy head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention, fading quite slowly over time and leaving a ton of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell - The aroma is big of a biscuit and cracker malt smell mixed with a strong showing of sweet candied fruits of orange and apricot along with a whole lot of banana. Along with these smells comes a rather strong showing of yeast and clove, as well as some notes of coriander and white pepper.
Taste – The taste begins with much less fruity and drier, but slightly more malty than I was anticipating from the nose. It begins with a rather big biscuit and cracker malt flavor mixed with a big showing of spice of clove. At the same time there is some herbal bitterness and a bit of light fruit of apricot and peach. The sweet fades a bit as the taste advances, all while the bitter gets stronger with more herb and some grassy tastes joining in. A yeasty flavor and a bit of pepper are present throughout the taste, and toward the end a little banana joins in, all while a more spice hits the tongue, leaving one with a somewhat buiscuity, more bitter, and drier taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium for the abv and style with a carbonation that is prickly and effervescent. Overall, pretty good for the style and a decently easy sipping feel.
Overall – An OK Belgium strong pale. A little more bitter and harsh then I would have liked for the style, but OK none the less.
