Summer isn't all about beaches and bikinis anymore. For us who don't make it to our tropical vacations, summer is synonymous with watermelon.
A familiar light straw pour that casts a hazy glow and an arid creaminess of froth to brim, the appearance is innocent in appearance. As the aromas lead with sugary melon allure a hint of hops with only a slim musty fruit note wafting about. Its that earthy, briny and pungent note that foreshadows suggestions of citrus, saltiness and fruit cocktail.
The tangy ripeness of watermelon, red grapefruit, tangerine and passionfruit play delicately on the early sips, and while its seemingly fructose-laden sweetness supports the hops. But suddenly the taste takes a nosedive into sourness. A blast of lemon, lime and acutely acidic sourness teases the jowls and takes the adult palate back to childhood "warheads". Yet as the hoppy taste is expected to trend more bitter, something sudden and sinister happens- sourness occurs instead.
With the sourness latching on and slowly releasing, the light-bodied and bone-dry ale casts aspirations of dried citrus, crabapple, cork must, and watermelon soda on the finish that seem to all wisp away in a fast-fleeting glimpse. Remarkably refreshing and highly characterful- this sour ale is meant for summer anywhere.
