I’ve been Great Northern curious for a while, but deterred by the hefty price tag for these 500ML bottles. I finally caved. Let’s see what all the murmuring is about.
The pour makes it look like art, a solid black mass rather than a liquid one. The nose is a gorge of bourbon, coconut, booze.
The Great Northern Barrel Aged Series 43 comes out swinging, sometimes below the belt. Booze leads with the helmet; flagged. There’s a spiciness more commonly attributed to rye barrels (my favorite) & no maple, just a flagrant sweetness that points to the maple and/or beans. Roast? I’m getting lots of flavors not on the label & little of what is, but it’s tasty AF, with one of the ram-roddest malt backbones I’ve kicked. Half an hour later the coconut arrives with a vengeance. Big. Thick. Not going to have an issue taking this solo.
An odd beer that doesn’t match what I expected but is an excellent brew nonetheless.
