Notes: Smoked Imperial Stout aged on bourbon barrels. How the significant amount af “Ashtray Heart” found its way to the brisk bourbon barrels is to this day an unsolved mystery. Nevertheless, let’s not twist our minds with bizarre details when this beer is ridiculously choice and overwhelmingly corpulent.

$10.99/bottle. Best before 2015.

A: poured with thick dark than head, opaque, black
S: malty, sweet, chalky, some bourbon with ash nose
T: very nice, well-balanced with deep roasted malt and some smoky/bourbon undertones, decent with some cloying finish and heat
M: full mouthfeel, cloying finish, thick, some astringency

Enjoyed in a hotel room in Rome in a small hotel glass.

BB 2015

A - Ash black with no head at all, which was possilby in part due to the glassware and the pour.

S - Bourbon up front that gives way to oak, vanilla and a lighter smoke aroma that is way more subdued than expected. Some chocolate in the background.

T - Bourbon up front with vanilla and oak. Smoke is subdued but is present in the background along with chocolate and roast. Very good integration of roast, smoke and barrels.

M - Medium body, very light carbonation.

"best before 2015" 12 oz bottle

a: pours very dark brown, almost black, and opaque with a half finger tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a thing ring around the glass. i see bits of lacing as i drink it.

s: i'm smelling some slight chocolate, oak and bourbon notes; actually getting an old soy sauce smell.

t: taste is much better than the nose - chocolate up front, then the bourbon and oak come through with a malty and slightly smoky finish

m: medium to full body with moderate carbonation

o: pretty tasty stuff but the nose is misleading. the name leads me to believe it's going to be super smoky but it's actually very subtle, which i don't mind in this beer.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours pitch black with a hint of ruby around the edges. Thin film of a head disappears quickly leaving a slight ring around the glass. Aroma of dark roasted malt, chocolate and a hint of bourbon. Odd initial flavor of stale dark fruit and roasted malt, perhaps some peat, then the roasted malt, vanilla and cherry starts to dominate the flavor, finishing with dark malt with light bourbon and smoke. The aftertaste is pleasant bourbon and smoke. Interesting, but the initial flavor doesn't quite work for me, although it develops into a more tasty smoky barrel aged stout flavor before the finish. The flavor kind of grew on me as it warmed and the alcohol cheered me up. Medium bodied, but virtually no carbonation. Another unusual Evil Twin that I'm glad I tried.

dark black in the glass with almost no head, some tan lacing and a slight oiliness on the surface.

nose, chocolate, dark berries (blackberry, raspberry, dark cherry) and sweet smoke similar to liquid smoke.

taste dry roasted dark chocolate followed by a punch of dark red fruit sweetness then char and smokiness from the barrel finish.

Mouthfeel thick, chewy, sticky and silghtly oily.

overall- I typically dislike smoked beers especially over smoked beers so i was on guard going in to this one but it surprised me. In my opinion the mildness of the smoke in comparison to the rich sweetness and mouth coating thickness of this one surprised me. Definitely a fine double porter/stout with an interesting barrel finish twist.

may have to re-try it with a fresh palate and nose to see if the smoke is more pronounced in a second bottle.

Split a bottle with my lady friend between two snifters. She paid 11.99...damn!

Popped this bad boy up and I was pleasently surprised to smell a faint smokiness followed by a sweet bourbon smell. Poured black like ay traditional imperial stout, left a thin brown head that just barely laced the glass.

A tasty treat that tries hard and succeeds in balancing the smoked flavors with bourbon. Wish I had more since it is quaffable and not alcohol heavy.

Hard to give it a higher rating due to the price, but it is a rare treat and would recommend it for any imperial stout lover that doesn't mind a lil' smoke.

Stay thirsty

Served in a Gale Sayers shaker pint glass.

To quote obnoxious internet folk everywhere: First! Anyway, I really enjoyed Ashtray Heart, so I was downright jazzed to find a barrel-aged edition of it. It pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of light brown foam. The nose comprises bourbon, roasted malts, molasses, light cocoa, and a mild bit of peat smoke in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, though the bourbon is stronger, the smoke blends in with said bourbon more than earlier, some vanilla bean shows up, and the cocoa surges forth darker, more powerfully. There's a lot of flavor going on here, and it comes close to being too much, but never truly does somehow. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a lightly chewy feel. Overall, a very nice stout. I think I kinda liked AH better, if only due to the higher smoke content, but this is a tasty barrel-aged beast.
