Served in a tulip
Impressive appearance. The beer poured a deep violet color that was reminiscent of Welch’s grape juice. Medium-full bodied. The liquid appeared slightly shimmery in the glass. A near finger-tall, super tight and creamy, magenta colored crown slowly rose above the body, but it quickly receded to a medium sized collar. As the beer was consumed, a patchy, streaky blanket of lacing stuck along the glass.
The aroma was intense and super fruit forward. Sugary sweet, concord grape notes came through big time. Blueberry juice was noticeable as well. Perhaps some black currant too. Unfortunately, I did not pick up any raspberry.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose but even sweeter. Once again, the concord grape presence was intense. Blueberry came through strong as well. Possibly some black currant too. There was a sweet-tart blackberry note on the back end and the finish. A puckering, lemony tartness and loads of acidity appeared immediately after the swallow. Sweet, juicy berry notes lingered here as well.
The mouthfeel was fuller bodied but not quite smoothie like. Viscous fruit juice came to mind. The liquid contained a fine, subdued effervescence that worked nicely for the style.
I typically love most fruited sours, but this one was a bit too sweet for me. That said, fans of concord grapes should definitely seek this out, as they was undoubtedly the most prominent notes in both the aroma and the flavor.
