Bottle at The Aviary. Thanks to Chris (spycow) and Jason for going in on this pricey venture. Served in a goblet.
A - White foam settles to a partial cap, thick collar, and splotchy lacing. Hazed orange-amber body; hard to tell the clarity of these, as the Aviary stuff poured the entire bottle into a glass for us.
S - Mild rum spice and that distinctive cane sugar. Heavy on the Belgian yeast and malt sweetness here, with hefty doses of caramel, and perhaps some light oaky vanilla mixed in. There's a hint of acetone in this one.
T - The taste thankfully loses the acetone note, but it also has only very faint rum character to taste. Belgian yeast is a bit understated and not very phenolic; just a lot of sweet malt flavors. Didn't really pick up enough rum character for my tastes, as that was the intended purpose of this series.
M - Smooth, medium-full body. Pleasant carbonation, and a sticky, yet lightly tannic finish. Some mild warming, but on point for the 9% ABV.
D - Nothing totally wrong with this beer, but it needed more spirit character, particularly in comparison to the other beers in the series. The base beer isn't particularly complex or exciting, and the spirit barrel didn't do enough work here. I don't think we finished this one.
