Brownish red color with an enthusiastic though short-lived foam. Lots of bubbles in the Duvel tulip and plenty of carbonation in the mouth. Deeply aromatic with the banana and clove esters.
Malty with a substantial body. the distinct taste of a Hefeweizen comes through. Very yeasty and bready with an aromatic rye note. This is fairly sweet with less of the resiny and grainy flavor of the typical American rye beers. This is more malty with just a tang of hops in keeping with the German style.
I think this is great stuff. It's so reminiscent of a Hefeweizen but with a darker, spicier flavor. From the 32 oz jug filled an hour ago at the newer brewery tasting room off Morena Blvd.

On tap at the Orange Street brewpub location.
IBU = 18
Pours dark borwn with a weak, thin head that leaves some lacing.
Aroma: floral hops
Taste: odd spicy (rye?) flavor that's slightly medicinal. Hint of baked bread.
Lightly sweet but seems a tad too sweet.
Feel: medium body; lightly crisp, medium carbonation.
O: did not enjoy this much but it is a nearly unfamiliar style.
