West Coast-Style IPA

East coast or West coast? You decide. Same hops, different yeast, two deliciously unique beers. Set West IPA is single dry-hopped and fermented with Cal Ale yeast for a lingering dryness and notes of sticky pine and ripe stone fruit. Laid back yet assertive – it’s west coast through and through.

Food Pairings: Spanglish Fries, California Style Pizza, Cajun Shrimp Tacos

Glass: Melvin 14-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $13.00 for a 4-pack of Rise East/Set West
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa, Calif.
Purchased: April 24, 2020
Consumed: April 25, 2020
Misc.: Canned on March 27, 2020 at 8 a.m. PT

Had Rachel pick this for me on a recent Coronvirus trip to Trader Joe’s. Not generally a fan of Coronado beers save for Weekend Vibes and a few others, but was looking forward to trying this (Set West) after enjoying the other side (Rise East). Apparently it is the same hops in each beer, but different yeast. Description on the can read, “East coast or West coast? You decide. Same hops, different yeast, two deliciously unique beers. Set West IPA is single dry-hopped and fermented with Cal Ale yeast for a lingering dryness and notes of sticky pine and ripe stone fruit. Laid back yet assertive – it’s west coast through and through.” After some digging on Rise East, found out the hops were Simcoe, El Dorado and Vic Secret.

Poured a medium yellow-to-gold clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of bright white frothy head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass at fast speeds. World-class layered foamy lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled sappy pine, resin, herbal, Simcoe, floral, passion fruit, tropical fruit punch, mango and menthol. Not much else, but still good. A little more flavor from the can with the addition of stone fruit, peach and earthy malt. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted about as good as the nose. In order got sappy pine, resin, Simcoe, black pepper, herbal, hints of black licorice, bitter mango peel, Vic Secret and El Dorado late. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Very good overall, but I certainly preferred Rise East over Set West. That’s hard to say coming from a West Coast IPA guy. (Overall - 3.75)

Canned 03/27/2020. On-point for the style. Clean, sharp, resinous. Not surprisingly, one of the OG west coast breweries nails a WCIPA. Let’s see how they do with the NEIPA cousin of this beer. Regardless, this is delicious and easy drinking. A seriously googled beer.

Look: It pours golden orange with a slightly off white head. Head retention is excellent.

Smell: There are strong aromas of stone fruit which are a combination of apricot and peach. There is a slight pine notes with some grainy sweetness in the background.

Taste: The flavors are very strong with stone fruit, mostly peach and some apricot. The pine is a bit more pronounced in the flavor than in the aroma. There is a bit of grainy sweetness to it.

Feel: It has a medium body with a moderate bitterness in the aftertaste.

Overall, not a hop bomb like many west coast IPA's which makes this an easier beer to drink. Great flavors of stone fruit with the other elements in support.

Picked up a 16 oz single at the Craft Beer Hop Stop 6-14-19 for $3.49. Canned on 5-23-19; consumed on 7-20-19.

Beer poured golden orange with a very nice white head that has some serious hang time.

Nose is a nice bouquet of orange and mango.

Taste is orange and mango over a moderate pale malt base. Finishes with a touch of grapefruit and pine; bitterness scale is 6/10.

Mouthfeel is soft and refreshing.

Overall a nice representation of the WCIPA style.

Gold beer with a slight cloudiness and a tall fluffy head.. Smells like tropical fruit (papaya, mango), citrus and pine. Tastes sweet and a bit grassy with papaya and grapefruit. Nice piney bitterness at the end. Pretty tasty West Coast IPA.

A; Clear gold with rich foamy head and thick lacing.
N: Soft notes of citrus, malt, floral and resin.
T: Follows the nose, light citrus hit with a burst of citrus, a little malt sweetness and floral notes. Light resin like feel with mild bitterness.
M: Medium with a light bitterness.
O: A decent IPA, a little soft on flavor but not bad.
