Collaboration with Karl Strauss

At the core of the San Diego craft beer scene, collaboration is what binds us pioneering breweries together. When Coronado Brewing and Karl Strauss came together to brew a beer, we decided to bring together two seemingly contrasting flavors and combine them into an eccentrically brewed West Coast IPA with Pacific Northwest apples. Core Values is a unique ale that’s hop forward like a West Coast IPA and finishes dry with a hint of crisp apple.

Picked up this on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Coronado’s website called it “At the core of the San Diego craft beer scene, collaboration is what binds us pioneering breweries together. Core Values is a unique ale that’s hop forward like a West Coast IPA and finishes dry with a hint of crisp apple.” Mentioned hops on the back were Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. Was secretly hoping it was some kind of a combo of Weekend Vibes and Aurora Hoppyalis.

Poured a medium yellow semi-clear color with 4-to-5 fingers of rocky-to-frothy white head. Could see some bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class foamy lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled Mosaic, red apple, stone fruit, Citra, Simcoe, floral, red grapefruit, mango, perfume, Fruit Loops cereal and passion fruit. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted a little better than the nose. Reminded me initially of Aurora Hoppyalis. Got Citra, Mosaic, red apple, stone fruit, red grapefruit, Simcoe, floral, mango, citrus pulp, Fruit Loops cereal, passion fruit and pine. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Long, juicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)

This was much better than I thought it would be. Got better each sip. (Overall - 4.25)

16oz can dated 3/15/21 poured firmly into an English pint glass.
Pours pale straw and light gold with a tall, pock-marked fluffy head that remains concentrated for a few minutes. Some lacing.
Nose has impressive and extremely fragrant fresh orange and mango environment. They are quite noticeable 18" away from the pour.
Tasting fresh squeezed oranges, mango, a firm, fast centralized sizzly hop/apple crisp blast and has a med-dry finish. The apple crisp notes are subtle but are ever present. Citra and simcoe are more present than mosaic but are well balanced. Malts are kind of mysterious. Aside from the pleasant fresh fruits no ingredients seem obstinate. Excellent mingling.
It has a mouth feel that is soft and smooth even with it's primary hop forward entrance. It feels like a 6.8% ABV. It is not intense but rather full and aromatic. Very enjoyable, fresh and pleasant. Quite drinkable. I find I'm taking smaller sips so I can capture as much savory goodness as possible that this gorgeous fresh tasting and fresh feeling West Coast IPA has to offer. A solid 4.5 all the way. It is fantastic! I feel lucky to have found it.
