i am kind of always happy to run the risk of ordering a saison from a brewery not known for fermentation forward beers for the off chance that i discover something truly wonderful, a unique yeast, a brett beer, something more than a basic blonde ale fermented with belgian or french ale yeast at high temperature. sometimes you slog through hundreds of the former to get to a single one of the latter, so the fact that this is pretty basic, Belgian estery and belgian pale more than farmhouse or rustic saison is not only unsurprising, its hardly even disappointing. the good news is that the beer is objectively good, even if its not the kind of saison i am always hunting, and i drank this happily enough. its simple, wheat based, yeast driven, and lightly spicy with some juicy hops on the back end. the yeast is sort of monotone, green pear and bubblegum to it, familiar high tone belgian notes, with just a hint of anise or something on the back end as it warms. i get some grassiness and even lemongrass from the hops which is cool, but this is not really hoppy beer at all. the body is light and the carbonation is good, its clean enough and on the dry side, no real complaints from a quality standpoint. do i wish this was more interesting, the other side of saison? of course i do, but that might be unreasonable to expect from these guys and i ended up relatively pleased with this, for its better than the vast majority of saisons of this type. i am fairly sure i have the right beer here, copied the details from their board in cheyenne, but it looks like in my research they have a lower alcohol one called so what as well, hopefully this is correct and not a confusion.
