On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, but I am not getting any real barrel aged qualities from this one.

Serving type: on tap.

Appearance: Chocolate color, decent foam and lacing.

Smell: Chocolate, caramel, dark fruit.

Taste: Chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, tobacco, oak, smoke, booze.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, with a slight smoke and booze aftertaste.

The Verdict: Incredible. A blend of dark beers aged in whiskey and pinot noir barrels for a year and a half. As good as the best anniversary ales, this dark strong ale will overwhelm your tongue with it’s depth and flavor.
