Cherry SaisonCherry Saison
Notes: Honoring the bounty of Michigan fruit country, this saison is brewed with a bold addition of Northern Michigan's Traverse City area grown Montermorency cherries. Known for their tartness, we selected this signature species to complement our light bodied saison. Celebrate the season.

I had this on tap at the brewery.

a hazy golden tan. The nose is funky, more estery than I expected. There’s a burst of cherries that comes across on the palate.

Had with soup and sandwich. A great saison to have with lunch.
Fortunately, I bought two cans and I had the other with leftovers for dinner. That also works.
I like Vivant and I'd like to think that Cherry Saison is good enough to make great food even better... but alas, I conclude Cherry Saison only makes average leftovers a slightly above average experience. Here's why.

Looks are almost good; a nice touch of amber to the pale malts, but more foam and particularly swirling protein would make it good. Smells are cherries and other tree fruit (like nearby apples); but not lots of richly fermented malt. Tastes are totally refreshing and don't try to steal the show... which is why this is a very good table saison for a meal-in-a-hurry (which is all I had time for.) Finishes fine; cleansing the palate for more varied leftovers (that was no big deal to start with.)

OA: I will have Cherry Saison again, but in the summer. I'd like Vivant to work on its yeasts more; to get the protein swirling in the glass, to make the malt into a delicious brew. And I hope to visit Vivant again; but I want to eat off their menu instead of mine. Ultimately, ales are part of the kitchen. Keep up the good work Vivant!

Pours an amber color with a foamy head that lasts a while. Aroma of cherries. Taste is refreshingly sweet and crisp with the cherries coming through. A good saison.

Really nice classic pale malt saison with a really subdued but concentrated cherry hue and flavor accent. Sweet malty character, the cherry is slightly tart but not puckering. Very easy drinker.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 6/18/2019. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big juicy/tart/tangy red cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light banana/bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big juicy/tart/tangy red cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light banana/bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness; light herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy red cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light banana/bubblegum, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a fantastic malt/spiciness balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness, tart/tangy fruit, and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, fairly sticky, and lightly acidic/tangy mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a fantastic fruited saison! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, pale/wheat malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the mellowly bitter/spicy/tart/drying finish. Very flavorful for the ABV, with a awesome soft feel for the style. Fantastic balance of juicy MI cherries, and classic saison yeast complexity; with a great balancing pale/wheat malt backbone for the ABV. Mild residual sweetness with crisp dryness, and not overwhelming on cherries or tartness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example. Their best classic saison yet, amazing summer beer.
