32oz growler filled at Heinen's in Downtown Cleveland
Growler poured into a tulip. Pours auburn with nice clarity and a fluffy light tan head that fades quickly leaving okay retention and little lacing. The aromas are faint and subtle. Hints of caramel and and lots of malts. Some fresh dough notes in the mix as well. The flavors are very nice. Lots of caramel and dark fruits. Lots of raisin and black cherry. It has a nice sweetness to it. There's a nice subtle warmth going on in the finish. Alcohol goes completely unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's on the lighter side of medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very smooth and dangerously drinkable.
This is a nice Scotch Ale right here. The flavors shine, which obviously counts more than anything. Enjoyable stuff. It's better than my "numeric score" might indicate. It's a good example of the style.

Wonderful malted sweetness lays the tracks for the inspiration of a strong scotch ale flavor that makes its way to northern Ohio. Its deep roots and grain influence is strong, allowing the earthen notes of the bog to sing complex and balancing praises.
With the slightest of haze, the deep chestnut striations thwart a heady sweet scent that's remiss with toffee, sorghum, maple and hazelnut. Its scorched sweetness invites a peppery and earthy counterpart as the ale develops over the middle palate.
Weakening its malty-sweet grip, the sugars fade to allow a nutty, peaty and peppery taste to enter the fray. However, the sweetness only retracts to mid-dryness and the more fruity flavors pronounce with maraschino cherry, grape and light licorice.
Remaining medium-full to the mouth, oily viscosity turns cream and semi-dry as the warmth of rum calderns from beneath and an essence of chocolate rewards the aftertaste.

Pours a slightly hazy deep brown with a foamy tan head that dissipates to nothing.
Caramel malt, booze, and a touch of smoky peat form the aroma. Figs, dates, and prunes add depth.
Flavor is sweet, with an underlying plastic/smoke phenolic component. Caramel malt dominates, with nutty notes drying out the finish. There's a prune note countering the profile.
Body is on the full side, with notes alcohol warmth and minimal carbonation.
Not the most complex malt character, and it's pretty hot, but the peat and dark fruit characters are nice.
