Collaboration with Fifty West Brewing Company

After a bit of back and forth with the crew at 50 West, we realized that many of us shared fond collegiate memories from simpler times spent in Athens, Ohio. Life was a bit smaller, slower & our responsibilities were far fewer.

As we swapped stories, a specific homey bar, Tony's & their infamous Hot Nut struck a chord. A simple mix of coffee & hazelnut perfectly embodied what we were all missing.

To attempt to recreate a Hot Nut, we turned to some close friends. Our hazelnuts came from an icon in Northeast Ohio, Heggy's Nuts. We then partnered with Hoof Hearted Coffee from Columbus for a unique blend of coffee that would marry all the flavors together.

We hope this beer makes Tony's proud & resonates with everyone who has shared a memory in the little college town of Athens, Ohio. We are grateful to have been able to bring together partners from all over this state to create something special. Cheers!

I got a 6pck of cans of this beer from my local Giant Eagle store. It poured an opaque dark with thin tan ring head that is leaving any lace. The scent had coffee and hazelnut notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with crisp semi sweet dark chocolate malt base with espresso and hazelnut presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

12oz can, filled on 12/08/21 (12:20:06), served in a Samuel Smith pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy gold-amber color. Thick white soapy/sudsy head with some small strands of lacing noted. This is one of those "golden stouts" so I have to keep that in mind when looking at it.

Smell: Vanilla, maybe a bit of hazelnut - well something nutty anyway. There was a whiff of coconut when I first poured it, but that went away quickly. The nutty smell is more obvious as the beer approaches room temp.

Taste: Quite sweet. Vanilla, candied nuts, maybe a hint of orange, very light bitter finish. I'm not detecting any coffee at all in this one. It all sort of works well together, just a shame I'm not getting the coffee that the brewer talked about.

Mouthfeel: Good thickness, prickly carbonation, quite sticky on the teeth. Not as thick as you would think a stout would be.

Overall / Drinkability: This is a very weird stout. Even as a golden stout I'm struggling to see what style it fits with. It sort of doesn't fit anything. I'd probably classify it more as a dessert stout given how sweet it is. Not sure why I can't taste the coffee, but the beer is over a year old now, so maybe that's why. Interesting, worth a try, but I think I only want one.

Looks good, smelled fine but I don’t get any hazelnut flavor though I was looking for it.
Still tasty and good looking stout, I’d happily drink it again.

Brew Kettle sometime comes up with odd brews, and I was a little worried that this Ohio U. related one would be of the odd but not very palatable variety. Fortunately it is the opposite, very drinkable.

This pours black with some head with small bubbles. The aroma is of sweet coffee and malts, hazelnut, I guess. The taste is first rate - sweet, hazelnut coffee with nice bittering and well concealed high alcohol content. It has a nice creamy mouth feel and goes down dangerously easy.

Recommended. As an OU grad I should give it blind faith, but no, it actually is pretty good. The price is crazy low too, like many products from this brewer.I may stop by and get more - I think they had these at the Mentor brew pub. BTW, as a 1978 grad, I have no idea what Tony's is.

Single can from Party Town, canned 12/8/2021 (2-1/2 month old)
Pours a deep golden color, well it says golden stout, not sure why others have dark brown/black.
Flavor has nice notes of coffee and hazelnut. I like it.

Not enough flavour in my opinion. I'm not a coffee guy, so this rating is higher than I might expect from others looking for an authentic Hot Nut.

For me, just a standard heavy, dry stout.

12 ounce can, canned on 12/09/20. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that stayed around for a while. There's also a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like coffee, roasted malt, hazelnuts and bittersweet chocolate. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some vanilla and a hint of anise. Nice balance between the sweet and roasty/bitter flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and a bit coating with a good amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good imperial stout, hoping Brew Kettle and Fifty West bring this one back at some point! $13.99 a 6-pack.

Collaboration with Fifty West Brewing Company. Canned on 12/9/20. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black; small khaki head that fades leaving decent retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward along with some hints of coffee and vanilla. The flavors are much bolder than the nose. The coffee really comes through and leads the way. More vanilla along with some coconut in the mix. Some chocolate. Nice blend of dark chocolate along with some chocolate syrup. Some roasted characteristics. The hazelnuts do their thing but don't dominate or come off as the star. Mild sweetness to go along with a solid bitterness. Solid malt backbone. Mild warmth in the finish, but it's not hot or boozy at all. The alcohol is ultimately well hidden considering the ABV. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy and smooth. It doesn't drink too small or too big. It's dangerously drinkable.

This is a really nice stout. It's bold and robust. The coffee shines and the hazelnuts do their thing. Nice collaboration. I really like it.
