Humulus Noctem or "The Night Hop" is our take on a double black IPA. We use a unique blend of eleven different malts including rye, biscuit, and of course of host of dark malts that give our IPA a complex flavor and dark as night color. CTZ is the base hop used as well as heavy amounts of Citra, Mosaic, and Chinook in the dry hop. The combination of malts and hops make this beer so devastatingly dank and flavorful that your taste buds will fear the night without it.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Clear 9-oz. plastic cup
From: Liquor King in Fresno, Calif.
Price: $5.99
Purchased: March 31, 2016
Consumed: April 1, 2016
Misc.: No BOD on bottle
Not necessarily looking forward to this one, but I did buy it, so… Not a big fan of black IPAs lately. I hope this changes my mind. Then I read the bottle and now there is some hope. Sounds to be a fairly complex game. Let’s see.
Poured a very dark brown, mahogany, almost black color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki tan, frothy head, settling nicely on the top. Excellent layered lacing on the sides of the cup. Excellent retention. This is a good looking beer, regardless of it being in a plastic cup or not. (Sight - 4.50)
Smelled a nice mix of malts (reads 11 on the bottle) and hops (reads four on the bottle). Specifically getting roasty malts, herbal hops, rye, toasty biscuit, cocoa powder, Mosaic hops, touch of floral aromas, maple syrup, menthol, cough syrup, purple grape and hints of Citrus hops. (Smell - 4.00)
Taste follows the nose, maybe a tad maltier. Got roasted smokiness, burnt cocoa nibs, bitter coffee beans, orange peel, toast, Mosaic hops, herbal hops, menthol, grape cough syrup, earthy, spicy rye and chocolate. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, roasty finish. (Feel - 4.25)
This was a pretty good black IPA and certainly exceeded my expectations. (Overall - 4.00))

On tap at Spokeasy Public House
A: Pours dark brown, pretty much no light passes through, with a frothy tan head that settles and lightly laces.
S: Cocoa (really comes out as it warms) and roasted malt, followed with some citrus hops, definitely grapefruit, hints of tropical fruit, some pine, and maybe a little touch of spice.
T: Citrus hops up front, grapefruit and a little orange, a some pine, a touch of subtle tropical fruit, then the roasted malt hits with light coffee and bittersweet chocolate.
M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, creamy smooth with the bitterness and carbonation keeping it from getting syrupy and thick.
O: Very well done perfectly balanced black IPA. You really get the full flavors from both the hops and the roasted malt.

This was unique and interesting...but not hoppy enough to satisfy my traditional IPA pallette

A - Pours black with a thick tan head. No transparency, good lacing. Almost stout-like in appearance.
S - Piney hops and toasted malt.
T - Sweet piney hops up front, no bitterness. Finishes malty with the taste of toasted bread. I like the balance of hop and malt in this one.
M - Full body, easy on the carbonation.
Overall this is quite tasty and very drinkable. There's much more going on here, but I'm still working on my palate and taste description (full disclosure). As recently mentioned, probably one of the better beers I've had from TS.

Pours a pitch black, with a medium tan head. Scent is quite pleasant,,, nice hoppiness with some good roasted malt aroma. Lovely chocolate notes. Taste is just as good as it smells. Tons of chocolate and a bit of smoked/burnt malt. The smokiness come through as the beer warms. The hops carry through. This beer is very enjoyable. Mouthfeel is full-bodied. Drinkability is high. This may be one of the best beers I've had from Tioga. Drink it fresh though... I see the hops fading very soon and this becoming 1/2 the beer it is now.
