Smoke Chaser Double Barrel Reserve is a blend of our 2014 vintage Smoked barleywine aged in bourbon barrels for 24 months and our 2015 vintage Smoked Barley Wine aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels for 12 months. The blend of barrels and slow oxidation transforms this beer into an uber complex barley wine with a rich malt backbone and complex whiskey overtones. Nuances of smoke, oak, and vanilla flow through every sip. Share with a friend now or Reserve for a special occasion. Cellar up to 5 years.

Smell: big hoppy grapefruit presence citrus fruits carmel vanilla
Taste: upfront a big malt presence carmel butterscotch middle of the mouth citrus Hops tangerine orange peel vanilla in the finish you get a hint of oak dry wood and a pretty noticeable grapefruit biterness.
Feel: full body but really creamy its a big beer.
Overall: For a fresh American barley wine this is really really good. Usually I'm not a fan of fresh American barley wines but this is really well done. Saying that I bet a few years of age on this would make this crazy good!

Type: 500-ml. bottle
Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter glass
From: Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company in Fresno, Calif.
Price: $15.71
Purchased: Oct. 13, 2016
Consumed: Dec. 30, 2016
Reviewed as: American Barleywine
Misc.: Bottled on March 15, 2016 (I believe); 1,000 bottle count; Red wax on bottle neck
Picked up a bottle of this and the original barleywine (2015) from Tioga-Sequoia on a recent work trip. Kind of a big fan from what I’ve had from them so far and his one really had me excited. Back of the bottle read, “Smoke Chaser Double Barrel Reserve is a blend of our 2014 vintage Smoked Barley Wine aged in Bourbon Barrels for 24 months and our 2015 vintage Smoked Barley Wine aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels for 12 months.” I gave the latter a 3.98 back in October and hoping this one to be in the 4.20-4.25 range.
Poured a red-brown amber hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of frothy khaki tan head, which dissipated rather quickly. Lots of little bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Decent watery lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Waited a little while for this to breathe. Once it warmed up I smelled dates, raisins, earthy leather, dark caramel, toffee, oak, vanilla, smooth bourbon, hints of rye whiskey, toasted brown sugar, unknown spices, hints of smoky wood and a touch of licorice. Got better as it went on. (Smell - 4.00)
Taste was a lot different. Wow, getting that smoke right away. Like the one I had in October, just a little in the nose and tons on the tongue. Getting smoky fire, rye spices, semi-charred wood, smoked brisket, leather, dark caramel, toasted toffee, toast, oaky vanilla, sharp rye whiskey and hints of oaky bourbon. No hiding this 14.6 pct. ABV. Could feel it go all the way through my body. (Taste - 4.00)
Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smoky, warming finish. (Feel - 4.00)
A very complex and interesting barleywine. Got better as it went down. (Overall - 4.00)
