The night sky in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks is really dark! It's so dark that the Sequoia Parks Conservancy created an entire festival around it. As a festival sponsor, we have brewed a Black Lager to shed some light on this spectacular event. This Black Lager is surprisingly light-bodied for the color. Easy drinking, with hints of chocolate and coffee on top of a slightly malty, but easy drinking and dry lager base at 5% ABV. Get lost in the darkness of this beer as we celebrate the 9th annual Dark Sky festival on September 24th, 2022, in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Glass: Three Weavers 16-oz. Willi Becher glass
Price: $13.00 for a 4-pack
From: Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company in Fresno, Calif.
Purchased: Oct. 28, 2022
Consumed: Oct. 30, 2022
Misc.: Canned on Sept. 9, 2022
Went over to Tioga Sequoia on a recent work trip to Fresno and naturally spent way too much money taking stuff back to San Diego. Had a taster of this first, giving it a 4.25 on Untappd and writing “I love this style of beer but this is excellent.” Beer Advocate description was “The night sky in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks is really dark! Poured a pitch-black color with five fingers of khaki-tan rocky head. Could see just a few bubbles creeping up along the sides of the glass. Very good spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled light coffee, toasty malts, chocolate, cocoa, semi-char wood and light campfire smoke. Not quite as good from the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Tasted even better than the nose. In order got light coffee, chocolate, cocoa, roasty malts, semi-char wood, light campfire smoke, burnt sugar, plum and lingering spice. (Taste - 4.25)
Light-to-medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, slightly smoky finish. (Feel - 4.50)
Just a lovely beer. Glad I got a 4-pack. (Overall - 4.50)

Can poured into a Tioga Sequoia Brewing Co pint glass

S: Roasty, coffee, char, and a touch of smoke, earthy, faint cocoa, subtle dark fruit, and burnt sugar sweetness.
T: Roasty, earthy char, coffee, a touch of smoke, a little dark fruit, plum, fig, and cherry, and burnt sugar and toffee sweetness.
M: A touch on the lighter side of medium body, moderate carbonation.
O: Really nice black lager, hits the spot on a fall evening.
