Some funk, earthy malt and oak. Virtually no sweetness to this. Some dark cherry in the background. Very short finish. Can't taste any of the 10% alcohol. Not traditional in the Oud Bruin sense.

A bit forward on the Belgian candi sugar for my taste, but very traditional Belgian flavours (though I haven't noticed such strong candi sugar in the Oud Bruins I've tried). Slightly sour with a soft but dry carb and a light, acetic yet sticky and overall medium-light mouthfeel. Soft flavour of roasty, nutty, and toffee malts with a pretty subtle bourbon character (especially at this age). Subtle tones of blueberry, blackberry, perhaps some red wine grapes. Aroma carries many of the same characteristics with a little more spice.

A: Pours a beautiful reddish-brown. Tall, airy and frothy medium brown head. Head fizzes out pretty quickly leaving no lacing at all. Quite decent head retention (higher carbonation perhaps?).
S: Fairly sweet aroma. Strong caramel, fruity esters and a heavy malt base that gives it a bready aroma. Lightly tart indistinct dark fruits. When swirled the tartness really stands out as sort of a generic berry tartness. Maybe a little bit of sharp citrus rounds it out. Aroma is quite subtle regardless.
T: Huh, very interesting flavor. Initially there is a sweet caramel from the bourbon. It quickly turns tart, lots of berry tartness mixing with a heavy bready malt. The sweetness prevents the tartness from going overboard and the tartness prevents you from drowning in a cloyingly sweet malt bomb. Bready malt continues into the finish, with a little flourish of oak and tartness that lingers forever.
M: Really does not feel as heavy as you'd expect. Feels like it's 7-8%. Smooth as can be though.
O: Really nice Oud Bruin. Flavors are well integrated, well balanced and very smooth. Smoothness cannot be overstated, this beer obviously has some age on it as it is about as mellow as a 10% oud bruin can be. Barrel character is not over the top, just adding a small amount of complexity but does not obscure the base beer.
