#397 ranked New England IPA | 6.60% ABV

Idle Hands Craft Ales
Massachusetts, United States

Notes: Rotating availibility. A true New England IPA loaded with hoppy citrus and tropical fruit flavors sitting on a cloudy backdrop of light malt. Bitterness is intentionally low to accentuate the intricate flavors of the hops and promote a "juicy" character.

Grapefruit and hops...two of my fave flaves. The original Four Seam is a beer I’ll drop what I’m doing to go purchase when my local places get it in stock, and the Galaxy variant is every bit as good. Pours beautiful yellow-orange, foamy white head, smells great, pleasantly fizzy, tastes like a top notch NEIPA juice bomb. This is an outstanding beer.

Lemon, lime, pine, grapefruit, melon and orange zest. Cracker malt profile. Lower carbed. Light to medium bodied. Prickly citrus bitterness up front, gives way to a rounded soft sweetness. Really good.

L - Beautiful murky orange with a finger of white head

S - Bursting with grapefruit, pineapple, oranges, and dank hop juice

T - Just as flavorful as the aroma. Intense dank hops with grapefruit and orange sherbet. Bitter thud on each sip and a finish of pineapple and dankness.

F - Creamy texture and no alcohol. Insane drinkability. Body is a little thinner than I'd like.

O - Amazing, AMAZING Galaxy IPA. Just as good as New England's best (if not better), but this is easier to acquire. If this was a TH or Trillium beer, you'd be blowing up the trade forums trying to get it.

Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Craft Beer Cellar, Roslindale, MA
Served in a tulip

A frothy, fluffy, inch-tall, bright white crown topped the cloudy, straw yellow body. The head quickly fell to a clingy collar. Minimal spotty lacing stuck along the glass.

The aroma was outstanding. Super fruity and bright. Tropical fruits came through big time. Loads of overripe guava and papaya. Strong mango notes too. Really juicy and sweet. Citrus notes were also apparent. Bit of chalky yeastiness.

The flavor was also really impressive, though not quite as punchy or as complex and the nose. Juicy citrus notes dominated. Freshly squeezed orange juice came to mind. Some tangerine as well. Moderately tart and tangy. Pineapple was also noticeable. Tart, wheaty and lemony in the center. The lemon notes intensified on the back end. More tart, citrusy tanginess and just a bit of rind-like pith and bitterness on the finish.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied and contained a fizzy, zippy effervescence. A bit nondescript perhaps. The liquid fluffed up nicely as it moved along the palate.

As much as I enjoyed Idle Hands’s Six Seam, I thought Galaxy Four Seam was even better. This is an outstanding New England-style IPA that definitely rivals some of the better offerings from Trillium and Tree House. Thankfully, this beer is substantially easier to acquire.

Pours cloudy opaque dark gold with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells like caramelized malt, musty passionfruit, pineapple, ripe mango, orange citrus, candied grapefruit, with dank floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like caramelized malts, passionfruit, pineapple, mango, orange citrus, candied grapefruit, lemon, with dank floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels juicy with a dry finish, medium-light bodied, creamy and smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a nice juicy Galaxy hopped IPA.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated a week out into a tulip glass.

Pours a completely opaque orange straw color with a finger of bright white head. The head is gone quickly, leaving some splotches of lacing before settling into a thin halo.

The aroma brings a nice balance of citrus and tropical fruit notes, with a subtle cracker malt backbone. There's a hefty dose of pineapple and orange juice, with some lighter notes of mangoes and tangerines.

The flavor follows the nose: pineapple and citrus up front, followed by a touch of overripe mango. Finishes crackery and yeasty with some citrus rind bitterness.

The feel is medium bodied with moderately low carbonation. Very creamy and smooth, even slightly chewy. Soft on the finish. Rindy bitterness hangs around for decades.

Overall, a great IPA that really showcases the galaxy hop. It's a fruit bomb, but has a subtle malt backbone and subtle bitterness to provide a nice balance.

Not sure what the canned on date is from the bottom...I think its says:"Spaceman" 8/30/17. Opened on 9/3/, its freshhh.

Super muddy, thick look....going all out "New England" style here. A white-out wheat color with a rather thick but short foam cap.

The Hop aroma is Jam-Packed with citrus, tangy and otherwise super juicy hoppy combo. Bold citrus, tropical juice and a sharp tang effect. Hop juicy nose!

A thick, smooth and full mouthfeel. Loaded with juicy/citrus/pine notes but never gets bitter. Staying with NEIPA style guidlines here. Maybe a slight earthy, tang and dry hop bitterness in the finish but its pretty subtle. Multiple layers of juicy hops, not super complex and a bit narrowly focused. The malt is perfectly light and bright, which allows full effect from the Galaxy hop strain.

A fine NE style ipa, not the most complex but very enjoyable.

From a 16oz can, dated 08/30/17... 'Spaceman' - I don't know what that means? Brutally hard pour into a spiegelau (see below).

Pours a massively turbid grapefruit juice-colour with a finger-and-a-half of bubbly, off-white head. Looks like you could stand a spoon up in it. Retention is very good with fat wads of sticky lacing.

Nice nose of yeasty bread crusts and fruit punch, orange, lime and berry, a little flowery.

First impression is of harsh hoppiness which takes a few seconds before I can start to tease out the taste. All the bitterness, what there is of it, comes right up front before sorting itself out into a nice, thick, doughy juiciness. Orange, lime, melon, guava, earthy and floral, slight dankness. Finishes a little tart with prickly lime juice and grapefruit pith.

Feel is smooth and soft - oats?, maybe a little better than medium bodied, with fine carbonation.

Overall, a really, really nice NEIPA, much preferred over the previous Four Seam (which, to be clear, was also really nice, but only one 'really') - less grassy/weedy, more fruity.

I'm finishing off my first four-pack and, from experience, a gentle pour into a pub glass produced little head or aroma whereas a hard pour into a spiegelau made the look and smell really take off. So, pour the shit out of that beer!
