The Wishart's ESB is in the tradition of old English Special bitters and would usually have more flavor, aroma and alcohol than a standard bitter. Our ESB is copper color and the nose is a blend of sweet caramel and fruity aromas.

The flavour of this beer is complex. At first taste, sweet caramel and light toffees are overwhelming. As the flavor develops, a mix of fruity, spicy and citrus start to present themselves and eventually take over the sweeter flavors.

The ESB is perfect to pair with traditional English foods such as fish and chips or bangers and mash.

Clear light brown with a modest head. Mild toasted malt nose. Light-medium body with a little sweetness. Very smooth but basic. Needs to be crisper.

On tap at The Clocktower Brew Pub- Byward Market in Ottawa, ON.

This one pours a copper brown color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

The aroma leaves a lot to be desired- generic sweet maltiness, and nothing else. This doesn't bode well.

Bitters are obviously not supposed to be super strongly flavored, but this one is a little ridiculous. There's generic maltiness, a little bit sweet, with just a wisp of barely fleeting hop bitterness. This is just so boring and poorly made.

This is lighter bodied, with a typical level of carbonation. At least it's pretty drinkable.

This is entirely forgettable and aggressively mediocre.

A clear amber brew, an off-white head, good lacing and some curtains.

The smell is nutty, red apple fruity, and some nettles.

Burned bread, ripe apples and some grape-fruit peel.

Medium carbonation, small bubbles, soft and smooth, a good body, a light dry finish.

A nice bitter well done, and I suspect a dash of american hops.

Best of the 5 I tried here. Clear gold/amber with a weak head. Grainy nose with some fruit and tastes about the same, Some grapefruit sneaks in as well. Lightly bitter finish. Medium sized, slick body but with a bit too much fizz. Decently balanced, sessionable brew.

On cask at... well, the Clocktower. A light brown, fairly thin head, to be expected from a cask ale. Quite cloudy at first, but eventually settled down.

Mmmm, takes me back to the UK. The berry-like smell you get from most good cask ales, a powdery strawberry kind of aroma. Fresh-baked biscuit shows off the malt.

Alot of caramel from the malt. Nice nutty flavour. Some great red fruit comes through. Hops are subdued but tasty leaving a lasting bitterness on the tongue.

Mouthfeel is what you want the cask ale for and this doesn't disapoint. Perfect carbonation and refreshingly smooth.

A great beer. However, on the menu, this is labeled an "ESB style" which it certainly didn't seem like to me. This was a bitter through and through but without any standout fruitiness or necessary alcohol to add that Extra Special. I'll have to try it on tap sometime.

Amber-yellow with lots of carbonation bubbles. Creamy mouthfeel, though light body, mild bitterness only. Above average carbonation but it suits it to give it something to drink, better with food. Fresh. Altogether decent beer, though nothing to write home about.
