Presentation: Sampled this both at the brewpub and at home via a growler. Brewed in honor of Marie Jean Paul Joseph Roche Yves Gilbert du Motier, better known as the Marquis de Lafayette, born 250 years ago this September and the namesake for Lafayette and West Lafayette. Made with pale, wheat and light and dark crystal malts. IBU around 30.
Appearance: Poured into a Duvel chalice. Pours with 1/2 inch light tan head. This settles slowly into a few island sof foam maintained by the chalice's nucleation site. The beer itself is beautiful, a deep red/brown color.
Smell: Tangy malt. Caramel malt with a noticeable wheat tang to it. Sweet undertones, almost sugary or bubblegum like.
Taste: Upfront flavors of earth and grass. Caramel and fresh leather. Mild bitterness lingers long into the finish.
Mouthfeel: Low carboantion level. Body is average.
Drinkability: This beer grows on me. I typically like LBC offerings in the English style, somethign they do very well. However, this is a solid departure from their norm. I don't know how long this will be around or if it will ever come back, but try it while you can.
