Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Mariposa, the Spanish word for “butterfly,” was the term used by California’s early settlers to name sites visited by seasonal flocks of Monarch butterflies. It’s also the name of one of our favorite stone fruits, the Mariposa plum. Our juicy high-summer plums were grown and picked by Blossom Bluff Orchards and added to oak foeders filled with mixed culture Brettanomyces farmhouse ale to age.

Prior to packaging, we finished the beer with a huge dry hop of El Dorado and Azacca. Like a caterpillar going into its cocoon, these ingredients enter the barrel as one thing and emerge as something entirely new. Pair this transformative sour ale with Spanish paella, Izakaya grilled chicken skewers, or plum coffee cake for dessert.

Enjoyed On tap at Griffon Gastropub, Clarence. Another crushable Almanac fruit sour. Purple coloured body. Plum flavour is well integrated with hop flavour.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a hazy rusty orange color with a thin finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off fairly quick to leave barely any lace. What was there, seemed to just slide into the glass.
The aroma had a nice semi-sweet juicy to sturdy bitter citrusy and plum sweet embrace. The sourness trickled in nicely and melded with a fair floral to almost lavender-like scent. Clean sweet grassiness rounded out the edges.
The flavor was a blend of the sour to bitter juicy citrus and plum features and then the sourness became more white grape/vinous sour-ed qualities. Light "Brett" amplified the sour notes. Vinous sour to semi-sticky sort of aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied as it seemed to sit just a touch under and having a pretty good sipping feel about it. ABV duly noted. Carbonation felt fine. Vinous sour does stretch my tongue somewhat but nothing overly astringent.
Overall, pretty nice American Wild Ale that I wouldn't mind having more of this Summer.

A: The beer is very hazy dark yellow in color and has some hints of purplish hues. It poured with a short bright white head that quickly settled down, leaving some wispy lacing on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of sour plums are present in the nose along with notes of white wine from the barrel aging.
T: The taste has sourness and oaky flavors from the barrel aging along with notes of white wine and hints of plums.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and slightly tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't have nearly as much flavors of fruit compared to the other beers I've had in Almanac's Farm to Barrel series.

A: Poured into a tulip glass to a hazy light gold topped by a finger of dense white head that fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of slightly citrusy and earthy hops with some plums and a hint of sourness.
T: taste is a nice and bright sourness up front with some citrusy and earthy hop notes as well as some hints of the plums. It has some slight funk to it at times as well. Swallow is funky oak, more earthy hop notes as well as some lingering tartness
M: This beer is somewhat light in body but it is not watery. Carbonation is adequate and slightly prickly. The beer also has a drying finish from the acidity.
O: Overall not a bad beer. The dry hopping seems to have more influence than the fruit addition. Somewhat disappointed since Almanac Sours are usually top notch. Still good but there are better things out there.

This beer pours a slightly pinkinsh orange with a small head. The aroma is distinctly fruit to start - plums, peaches, underripe apricots, green apple, dusty wood, burnt sugar, tea maybe - there is something familiar here I cannot quite name. The flavor is more than slightly tart, with a clean vinegar sourness, and a strong plum flavor, with hints of raisin, pomegranate, almond, and a beautiful tannic finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light, with lowish carbonation and a dry finish. Overall this is a really tasty beer, slightly funky, nicely fruity, the right amount of tart - it really is very pleasing.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/3/2016. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tart/sour plum, peach, apricot, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, pear, green apple, melon, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of leathery/musty funk, pepper, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, plums, citrus/fruity hops, pale malt, and wine barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/sour plum, peach, apricot, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, pear, green apple, melon, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of leathery/musty funk, pepper, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/sour plum, peach, apricot, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, pear, green apple, melon, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, pepper, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, plums, citrus/fruity hops, pale malt, and wine barrel flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and yeast/oak spiciness balance; with zero puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tart/spiciness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic, and lightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.8%. Overall this is outstanding fruited sour/wild ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, plums, citrus/fruity hops, pale malt, and wine barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly lactic/tangy/drying finish. Really well rounded Brett complexity and solid lacto presence; awesome balance of plums, citrus/fruity hops, and wine barrels; with a nice malt backbone to balance the acidity. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.
