This is our Burly Scotch Ale. Aged in rum, rye, and bourbon barrels and then blended. An ale that is sure to bring out the YAWP in all of us.

The Barbaric Yawp – Barrel aged. 12 oz can. From Blackrocks Brewery. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Received from @Whyteboar in NBW BIF #16. Reviewed 11/12/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “YAWP BE 10.4 ABV 1/02/21 ~ 1126”. Served at 42.4 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 47 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), muddy and opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, translucent, and orange amber.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.2 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, medium density, quickly diminishing to a 0.1 cm crown with a thin, rocky cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4.5 – Strong malt, no hops, no yeast, no bourbon, no barrels.
Flavor – 4.5 – Flavor follows the nose – malty, slightly sweet, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (10.4 % ABV as marked on bottom) aroma or taste. Slight gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Fooled me! Although it was malty, it lacked the peat smoke nuances I’ve come to associate with Scotch ales/wee heavies. There was a slight weak generic woodiness but not like an oak barrel. I didn’t detect any bourbon and I wouldn’t recognize rum. It was a tasty and easy drinking brew, maybe a little too easy for 10.4% ABV.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Slight hiss when the can was popped. Pours a dark brown with a relatively thin layer of light brown head. The nose is relatively subtle. Toffee, dark bread, metal, a touch of brown sugar, and maybe some figs. To reiterate, it's fairly subtle.

The taste is really interesting. There is a sweet toffee flavor, but there is a strong hoppy presence. A touch of citrus peel. Strong malts. Figs, almonds, a nice roasted malts note. I'm getting a rye spice note.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Overall, a really nice Scotch Ale!

Poured reddish amber, dark and translucent with an off white head gracing the top.
The aroma was first scotch ale, malts of dark bread and caramel scents and the rum seemed to trump the bourbon.
Taste followed, sweet and bready malts are carried along by a curious liquor blend of bourbon and rum and somehow the rum leads the way. Certainly a different BA scotch ale, quite unique.
The feel is thinner than expected, but not unpleasant at all, actually makes it drink easier and belies the ABV.
Nice tasting beer, easy to down a pint (or 12 oz can) and certainly worth trying.

12 oz can
Superspak special
Calusa snifter

Deep mahogany ruddy red, with a thin head of 1/2 finger, receding to a thin line.

Aroma is the way a barrel aged scotch ale should be. Root beer candy, vanilla, sticky figs, plum syrup, hot whiskey, and oak tannin. A little bit of cinnamon in there too.

Flavor is hot and piney, with little dabs of caramel and vanilla in there. Some molasses candy, brandy, slight cherry, and toasted malt.

Feel is somewhat thin, but leaves a texture coating on the mouth. Hot alcohol sears the roof and tongue. Sticky dry finish.

Overall a good barrel aged scotch ale and I would try it again.

From a 12 oz. can into a snulip glass, this beer pours out a very deep, burnt caramel. Burgundy and maroon highlights. A pinky worth of very light tan, almost white bubbles rest on top.

The nose carries in a beautiful, soft rum presence; botanical and fruity. It mixes with notes of toffee, caramel and a slight lingering smokiness. It also shows notes of oak, leather, figs, molasses, bread and some jammy grape. Really great smell that has a lot going on, but doing it so it all works together.

The taste brings in a more defined earthy smoke. Still brings in all those accenting notes. Rum, bread, dark and light fruit, grape, molasses, toffee and even black tea makes its way in there.

The mouthfeel is a little thin, considering this thing is 11%. But, for a scotch ale, it’s not unnaturally thin. Some sweetness faintly coats the mouth before it finishes dry.

Overall, this is a very well made and enjoyable scotch ale. It has a lot going on and managed to make it all work.

Pours a foggy, dark burgundy that is difficult to see through. Head is two fingers of khaki foam with a rocky ring of foam lingering a long while after the pour. Aroma is toffee, plum, raisins, oak, toasty, nutty, caramely, grainy malts with a sliver of heat. It starts out sweet and continues to be sweet all the way through. Flavor profile is plum, dark fruits, raisins, red grapes, toffee, molasses and caramel with rich and dense notes of toasty, nutty, bready, caramely malts. There is just a little barrel character on the back end, which reign in the sugar rush at the finish. It's rich and sugary, with a decidedly sweet taste. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a still, lightly grainy texture. Overall, rich and sugary with a light layer of barrel character at the finish to curtail the sweetness.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 12oz can.

12oz can. Snifter glass. Dark brown body, nearly black, fairly opaque, one finger offwhite head, thick rim of lacing, fair retention. Smell is an interesting medley of sweet sugary rum, big caramel, a bit of toffee and some whiskey warmth. Light vanillin, brown sugar, molasses. Distinctly sweet, to remind you that there is a scotch ale behind all this. Flavour follows; warming caramel, brown sugar and molasses with rum warmth and sweetness, a little bit of smoke and smooth oak and vanillin, decent barrel presence. Medium in body, good carbonation, plenty of sweetness without being too cloying. Overall, a very solid barrel-aged scotch ale, with a good contribution by all barrels, although the rye is a little bit lost in all this.

A - Pours a dark reddish brown with a twin finger creamy off white head. Nice amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is plums, red apple, raisins, caramel and light bourbon.

T - The taste is caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, plums, raisins, oak and bourbon.

M - Medium body with low carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a nice crisp finish.

O - This is a pretty killer BBA scotch ale. The flavors are spot on with the bourbon not overpowering the base beer.

12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 12/10/2018. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/orange/copper color, with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, roasted nuts, chocolate, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Very minimal diacetyl. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, roasted nuts, chocolate, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and rum, bourbon, rye whiskey, oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, dark fruit, cherry, apricot, red apple, brown bread/crust, coconut, roasted nuts, molasses, light licorice/chocolate/smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness and rum/bourbon/rye/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness, or astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and rum/bourbon/rye/oak spiciness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth of 11%, with minimal barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic mixed barrel aged scotch ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Definitely a big improvement over the base beer, of which I am a big fan. A lot richer on flavors. Perfectly balanced rich malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon/rum/rye barrel presence/integration; with solid earthy hop presence against sweetness. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazingly spot on style example.
