Had a pint on tap at the Backstreet Brewery/Lamppost Pizza place in Vista. The bartender said it was a saison made with honey and prickly pear.
Magenta/orange color (from the prickly pear I'm told) with a 1/4" head that recedes to a thin film. Leaves a little lacing.
Smells nice, soft floral scent with the honey showing up a little, just a bit of underlying funk, a little lemon and/or orange peel.
Honey, rose water, some fruit I'm assuming is prickly pear, a little sharp funk in the middle that blends into lemon and bitter orange on the finish. The funk and some white pepper spiciness comes back in the aftertaste with a nice dry tartness and a little hop bitterness.
Light bodied, smooth, unobtrusive texture. Pretty well carbonated, ends clean.
Pretty interesting flavors and a bit of complexity keep you coming back. Kind of refreshing too.
It's odd and certainly not a traditional saison, but it has character. I like it.
