On tap, at the Farmer’s Cabinet (Philadelphia, PA) on 12/16/11. Served in a tulip glass. The beer menu describes this as a Saison brewed with pumpkins.
Pours a deep clear copper, topped with a ½ finger of slightly off-white foamy head. This maintains some rich edges, with a nice flare-up that throws up a robust cascade of lacing which quickly falls back and doesn’t leave a whole lot of lacing behind. The aroma is green pumpkin meat up front that is backed by the snappy (and borderline almost souring smelling) twang of wheat character behind it. Spice and light funky earth accents sit on top but only get a bit lively in the nose later on as things warm up, as it mostly sits with more of a flat green feel throughout the bulk of this.
Like the nose, the pumpkin jumps out first to me, with a flat feeling green fleshiness, that does get a bit brighter feeling in spots, and melds mostly well with the crisp lively sweetness of the wheat. There is some softer earthy fruitiness and spice throughout the profile, with the spice in particular really coming out strong in pretty dry finish. The greenness of the pumpkin really controls this though and unfortunately seems to cut down on the complexity of this. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a solid crispness on the tongue that helps bounce the wheat and yeast flavors around in the mouth. Things get smoother along the back and couple with that approachable 6% ABV to help keep this nicely drinkable.
This was just OK. As I mentioned before, that green and flat feeling strength of the pumpkin flavor hindered this a bit and the Saison portion that I tasted was rather cut and dry.The ease of the body probably helps keep this in the game a bit more than it should. The whole package was just kind of there and didn’t leave much of an impression on me.
