Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Serenata Notturna is Crooked Stave’s take on a Belgian Strong Golden Ale, primary fermented with Crooked Stave’s mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria in previously used Sherry Casks.

To further push the envelope with our mixed culture fermentations we knocked out a beer with a starting gravity of 22° Plato and fermented this beer to 12% ABV, a bit higher ABV then we usually brew at.

Pours a nice shade of amber. Smells very funky. Tastes funky too - a little sour, a little bitter. Nice carbonation. Overall - I don't particularly like sour beers. I would drink this again.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a nice looking ruddy burnt dark amber color with a thin film of a little white foamy head that quickly softened to leave some speckled lace running here and there.
The aroma had some sweet to sour red cherries, light black cherries flesh, some sweet wood, just a whiff of vanilla, light earthiness, and ended with a touch of a blend of tart black and red cherry skin.
The flavor was moderately sour melding the sweet to the tart underneath and bringing in a touch of sweet to sour and woody stickiness in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine, somewhat low, but good. However, I think this is an aged bottle despite me not knowing the date. Finish was semi-sour, slightly woody and a coherent smoothness.
Overall, American Wild Ale? Yes, I can see it, a bit "deeper" in it's body more than I expected for the style. I'd have again for me.

I had this beer on-tap in a goblet at Collins Pub in Seattle.

Appearance: rich, dark red-brown hue with moderate haze and a thin layer of tan foam. Not at all bad.

Smell: tart and sweet with almost a brown-sugar character. A nicely sharp treat!

Taste: like the aroma, this is candylike. The tartness and sweetness work great together, though the total picture is not especially complex. A good beer, though.

Mouthfeel: light body with a decent-enough carbonation and OK creaminess.

Overall: of course I like this beer; it's a sweet sour! There's not much to distinguish it from its compatriots, but I personally find it very tasty and drinkable.

December 2015 bottling. Pours orange brown, hazy on first pour, small head of foam. I heard zip when I popped the cap. Smell wise, I notice sour cherries, some funk and oak. Taste wise, sour cherries, oak, mild funk, acetic acid, pretty much zero alcohol unless it hits me deeper into the session. Medium body with lively carbonation. Pretty darned tasty.

-ruddy, hazy brown tap pour with a thin foam cap. The nose is acidic and includes grape notes. The flavors are varied: sweet malt body with tropical fruit and some cherry peach in there too. Vinous threads lace this together. There are woody notes and acid bitterness and some funk. The alcohol is completely hidden. This is a a really good and complex brew.

Drank from a 375 ml (12.7 fl oz) bottle purchased at Whole Foods - Columbus Circle, New York, NY
January 2016
Served in tulip

Really attractive appearance. The hazy liquid was a mix between burgundy and violet and reminded me of the color that blueberries stain paper towels. A fluffy, bubbly, two-finger tall crown of light pink froth topped the liquid and slowly dropped to a thick, resilient cap. Large streaky patches of lacing coated the glass and stuck around until the beer was finished.

The aroma was super tart and funky. This had an intense rustic, aged quality to it. Really musty. Big red wine notes. Loads of tart red wine vinegar as well. Quite Brett forward. Good amount of oaky barrel. There was a subtle fruity quality but I definitely would not guess blueberry per se. As the beer warmed, a bit of sweetness came forth.

The flavor profile was just as intense as the nose but far less nuanced. The beer was incredibly sour and acidic right from the get go. Red wine vinegar dominated. Bit of underripe berry presence. Loads of lemon in the center. More sourness and acidity on the back end and in the finish. At times, this reminded me of pure lemon juice. Subtle oaky notes lingered after the swallow. By the drink's end, I felt like the acidity was stripping the enamel from my teeth. On a positive note, the 12% ABV was remarkably well buried.

Terrific mouthfeel. Medium-full bodied for the style. The liquid contained a lively, zippy effervescence that frothed up nicely on the palate. Crisp and sprightly. Creamy, slick and smooth.

While a few of the Crooked Stave's fruited wild ales have some amount of fruitiness and balance, most are overwhelmingly sour and acid. Serenata Notturna definitely fits into the latter category. Like so many of their beers I have seen in my local liquor stores, this one was bottled over a year ago and likely spent too much time in a non-temperature controlled storage facility. I really hope distributors put an end to the practice of unloading shelf turds in new distribution markets.

Vigorous pour yields a 3/4 inch white head over a mahogany body with minimal lacing. Nose of grapefruit, sour apple, more citrus, and a hint of oak. Taste follows nose, nice and tart with a finish of tart prunes?!? Nice feel at first, and overall I can not believe this is 12% abv; not in a million years!
