Very Good
Notes: Citrus Double India Pale Ale
Elevated from our experimental hazy IPA series, Do You Even Zest?! is a limited release loaded with an immense amount of hops and freshly zested citrus. This Citrus Double IPA was born out of our playful nature as brewers looking to challenge the status quo. Our team meticulously zests fresh citrus for each and every batch, which begs the question, do you even zest?

12oz can. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of citrus and toasted caramel. Zesty citrus taste with a sharp piney bitterness and toasted caramel finish.

This is still the only beer I've tried from Crooked Stave, but it was a winner! Tons of fruity citrus notes in the can pop smell, and in the taste as well. Nice balance, a bit on the sweeter end of the spectrum with less of a hop bite. Very drinkable and smooth, although not a super-engaging mouthfeel.

Happy 4th of July, 2019 aka Independence Day for these United States! Since I spent a couple/few days celebrating CANada Day on 01 July, it only seems right & fitting to spent this four-day weekend drinking, reviewing & rating AmeriCAN-owned & made beers. Here goes! Cheers!

From the CAN: "Juicy*Tropical*Citrus*Hazy"; "Elevated from our experimental hazy IPA series, Do You Even Zest!? is a limited release loaded with an immense amount of hops and freshly zested citrus. This Cirtus Double IPA was born out of our playful nature as brewers looking to challenge the status quo. Our team meticulously zests fresh citrus for each and every batch, which begs the question, do you even zest?"; "cultured in yeast [undersigned] Chad Yakobson Brewmaster"; "Pack In. Enjoy! Pack Out."

Nothing to report on the Crack! this time, other than everything was Green & Go! I went with a slow, steady C-Line Glug until it became obvious that clarity was not a CANcern. I then throttled up, allowing it to form just over two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with moderate retention. Color was a deeply-cloudy Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9). Nose was really citrusy & zesty & I was reminded of the first time that I was taught to make zest.

The CAN depicts the method of unwinding the peel from its fruit using a knife, as is a common thing at bars, where the "tape" is used as a garnish. I was taking HomeEc & we were using a grater to make zest to be baked into bread! If you think that zest smells good, you should smell it in baked bread! Yum.

The nose had a lemony-oranginess that was highly reminiscent of the bread prep. Mouthfeel was medium, but the softness that I had noted in their earlier beers now translated to a definite creaminess! It was like a liquefied Dreamsicle! Orange & vanilla with a little grapefruit to keep things from being too sweet. Think fruit smoothie meets Dreamsicle. Yum. Finish was dry, but more citrusy-bitter than hoppy bitter. It is marked as a "Limited Release" probably because of the time & effort that goes into creating the zest, but I REALLY hope that they bring this one back full-time!

12oz can.

Pours hazy gold with an orangy hue and a lively head. Plenty of pithy orange zest and citrus in the nose. Medium bodied with a crisp mouthfeel. Bright and zesty on the palate with a good dose of hops to follow through and a firm bitterness. Finishes with vibrant orange oils and pithy hops.

Nice beer but two in a row would be tough as the zest character is quite pronounced.

12 oz can, dated 3/19/18. Pours hazy milky yellow with a small white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is a bit subdued with wheat malt and fruity hops.

The flavor is lots of sweet citrus fruit followed by a pretty big resiny hop bitterness and some alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice NE DIPA.

Yes, yes I do even zest Broh! That question is answered with one flip of the top and those promised citrus zest aromas begin to spill into the room. Crooked Stave asks the question but they know the answer. They've taken the fruity character of hops to a greater fruit plateau with the radiance of lemon and orange zest in a hazy, imperialized, New England styled IPA.

Do You Even Zest pours with an intense perfume of citronella, boisterous even for the turbidly hazed style. And as a frothy lather builds on the beer, a background of verbena, tea and herb decorates the nose. A malty sweet early palate brings a notion of light caramel, honey and meringue to mind.

And as the flavors unfold on the middle palate, its sweetness retreats and its hops begin to blossom. Grapefruit, orange and lemon spring to life before the additions of lemon and orange peels push the character of hops past the fruitiness level that they normally achieve on their own. Flirting dangerously close to furniture polish, the citrus backs off and allows the soft resins of fresh spruce, wintergreen and botanical gin to create a bitter and herbal late palate.

Medium bodied but trending dry, the beer's early creaminess gives way to a crisp, clean and highly refreshing finish. The mild alcohol spice of gin and juniper aid in dryness as the ale trends slightly more "West Coast" than "New England". A long linger of bitter citrus keeps the beer's rewards and challenges coming deep into the sip.

CS gets in on the NEIPA biz and this one's looks are good for starters.

There's a shine on the orange haze with this one and plenty of rocky froth to go around with thick leftovers of lace. Orange and lemon zest to the nose. Not as prominently tangy and juicy as some, but the nuance lets notes of vanilla, grapefruit rind and come peek through. Light to medium in body and creamy at points.

I'll keep this one in the ice chest, and refill it it with extreme prejudice when it runs out.

12 oz can in Ohio.
As the can says, citrus, tropical, hazy and juicy, to which I would add a bit dank, grassy and piney. Moderate bitterness for style.
Feel: Medium body and carbonation.

A- Standard can into a tulip glass with a very, very chalky and cloudy pale yellow-orange body. The head forms quickly to about two fingers high with a luscious and thick creamy consistency. Great head retention and rings of lacing at each sip stop.

S- Considering the name of the beer it is not hard to guess what this would be like: a ton of zest indeed. Orange zest blasts off the top and combines with the other fruity hops and some sweet hints to actually suggest a creamsicle a bit. Citrus zest dominance with orange and grapefruit oils all the way. Yeasty bready hints.

T- Changes quite a lot from the aroma and this is not surprising as the bitter oils from the zest really come into play and zest gets even more dominant than in the smell. Grapefruit and orange zest saturate the palate and the flavor is similar to when you peel a clementine with your teeth/bite into it. It appears that Crooked Stave, does indeed, zest. Ruby red grapefruit juice and intense bitterness.

MF- Creamy and puffy consistency to the light-medium bodied ale. The bubbles are at a fairly high level and it ends with a very sharp citrus and hop bitterness.

Hops stand no chance against the level of zest that Crooked Stave have put into this brew. Intese citrus bitterness and flavor pierces the palate and dominates the flavor profile.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very hazy, medium golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of pale malt, citrus hops, orange, tangerine, orange rind, lemon; a little tropical fruit and dankness. Flavor of pale and slightly caramel malt, orange, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, hints of tropical and light stone fruit, citrus rind. Finishes with solid orangey hop bitterness with a little mint. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Well, this was a gamble that paid off nicely. I'm still on the fence with hazies, but decided to try at least one from each brewery and the chance at a non-sour/wild Crooked Stave was a no-brainer. And I'm glad I got it. The look was classic NE hazy IPA, but the aroma was much more citrusy with only hints of tropical fruit. The flavor followed, with lots of orange family citrus as well as other citrus notes and hints of other fruit. The finish was nicely bitter, which is my red line for these hazies; I get bored of the ones with mild finishes. This kept my interest throughout the taste (and glass), and the lingering bitter orange flavor was somewhat complex and reminded me of great imported citrus drinks. It takes an interesting hazy IPA to convince me and this is one of them. One of the few certain repeats in this style.
