this is crazy good, one of the more unique fruited variants of this so far, as the marionberry is pretty pronounced in here. deep dark brown brew with just a bit of purple stain from the fruit and a tanish head, frothy from the tap and lasting. i smell oak, acid, and roast right away, a coffee earthy bitter darkness to it, but a smooth mellow oak with some vanilla and sweetness to it, and then the fruit, which is sort of blackberry-esque to my nose. lastly sharp bacterial sourness, drying and intense. the flavor is fantastic here, with a lot of the berries coming through the dark grain, intensified by the sourness, there really is some tartness to the fruit along with the dark jammy sweet aspect, its there all the way through too. faint smoke and tannins in the wood, a strong whiskey note here, and a foaming rich body thats cut only a little bit by the stinging acidity in this, really sour, and a long pucker persists after the swallow. the depth of flavor here is enormous, and the berries add a lot. bretty funk at the end, but this is more sour and bacterial than it is bretty to me. one heck of a beer here from crooked stave!

Served on draft at Crooked Stave's taproom.

Appearance: ruby(ish)-brown with purple hues. The head is made of superfine, dark tan bubbles which fade to a collar.

Aroma: jammy, luscious "boysenberry." Very inviting. Very light Tootsie Roll aroma and light oak.

Flavor: wonderful! There are multiple layers. Sour upfront, but not overwhelming, then comes the funk. The marionberries come through in the finish very well and clean -jam like. No whiskey flavors from the barrel. No alcoholic heat or warmth.

Mouthfeel: excellent for style; heavy-medium, but yet 'light' when considering the 9.66% abv.

Overall: this is a complex beer with multiple layers. This variant is better than Nightmare on Brett - Raspberry. The fruit is very well done. This particular beer is one of Crooked Stave's beer that I've tried to date.
