05/06/20 pull-tab 12 fl oz can with an orange and black label:
Canned 03/31/20.
Served cold into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.
"IPA." "Brewed with Mandarin Citurs & Vanilla." "Double Dry Hopped with Mandarina Bavaria & Citra." 6.0% ABV.
HEAD: Thin but long lasting (~8-10 minutes).
BODY: Murky tangerine with plenty of lees/yeasty floaties within.
AROMA: Citrus. Vanilla. Tangerine, orange, Mandarin orange, citrus juice.
On the sweeter side owing to its vanilla additions, but enticing.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Acidic citrus (rind, orange peel, tangerine, Mandarin orange) is countered by mellowing vanilla sweetness with pale wheat and pale malt giving it a neutral malt base to tie it together. Mandarina Bavaria and Citra are well showcased, though in the latter's case not as well as it is in other IPAs (e.g. Kern River's Citra).
Smooth, wet, refreshing yet medium-bodied, well-carbonated. A bit pulpy and juicy, which feeds into its citrusy vibe nicely, helping accentuate its dominant orange flavour. Fruity to such extent if you told me this was a fruited IPA I'd probably believe you. Hell - I'd like to try this fruited...maybe yuzu and/or Szechuan peppercorn for some added citrus, Crooked Stave?
It's a balanced IPA with moderate complexity and nice depth of flavour. I was skeptical about the vanilla, but then I'm just tired of all those Johnny-come-lately so-called "milkshake IPAs" making the rounds out there...since this lacks any artificial sweetness from lactose sugar or the like, the vanilla actually works.
OVERALL: A likable IPA from Crooked Stave, even if it's clear they're just catering to the market (their saisons and brett sours seem to have a lot more passion and care behind them). The lack of filtration actually helps it; its yeast-derived fruity esters complement its citrusy taste. I don't know that I'd buy another sixer and by contemporary standards it's somewhere between a pale ale and an IPA proper ABV-wise (6% is increasingly considered to be on the low side for an IPA), but it was a fun one-off romp and it's nice to see Crooked Stave packaging in more consumer friendly formats at a lower price per ounce.
