Crooked Stave X Resident Culture Brewing collaboration. 4x16 fl oz pull-tab cans cost $12.99 USD plus tax at a beer store in Colorado.
"Helles style lager." 4.5% ABV. Brewed and canned at Crooked Stave. Canned 07/08/21.
Served chilled into New Glarus stemware.
BODY: Clear yellow free of any sediment/lees/etc. Clarified and filtered nicely.
HEAD: ~7cm in height. White in colour. Fluffy, soft looking, frothy. Could be thicker. Retention is good (~5 minutes).
AROMA: Suggests a dry subtly fruity malt-driven beer. I don't know that I'd know it was a lager if I came at it in a blind tasting; some of the fruity notes parse as esters for me and I'd even go as far as to say it flirts with a malt liquor or cream ale like ale yeast ester profile.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Dry with lemony twang. No overt Noble hop presence. Not getting much in terms of fresh helles malt flavour.
OVERALL: Doesn't unseat Bierstadt Lagerhaus' expression of the style for me, and I doubt it'll do so for many others in the Colorado market. Doesn't best German brewed expressions of the style either.
